Unhappy Updating calibre portable

Upgrading

If you want to upgrade a previous version of calibre portable, download the latest version from here and replace the "Calibre Library" and "Calibre Settings" folders in your new download with the same folders from you old calibre portable.

I'm running calibre portable on my laptop. I downloaded the new version of calibre portable to my computer. I copied the "Calibre Settings" folder from my prior calibre portable folder and pasted it into the new calibre portable folder. I did the same thing with my "Calibre Library" folder. (I copied and pasted the library folder. I did not use the move/switching function within calibre for the library at this juncture).

When I clicked on the new calibre portable program, the welcome wizard started. It asked me to select the language. Then it said that a blank folder was required for the library. Calibre then completed opening with one book (the start up guide) in its library. I then used the switching function to access my existing library.

After these steps, my results are that none of the preferences or plugins that I'd set in my prior version of calibre portable show up in the new version. Not a single one. My true calibre library is embedded within another calibre library folder, so that I have to switch libraries to access those books. I only had one library in the first place.

What do I do now?

Okay - here is what I've done that seemed to work.

I downloaded the new version of calibre portable, which contains 4 items:

Calibre file folder
Calibre Library file folder
Calibre Setting file folder
Calibre portable application

I went into my existing calibre portable installation and deleted the Calibre file folder and the calibre application, leaving the Calibre library folder (with all my books in it) and the Calibre settings folder.

Then I copied over the new Calibre file folder and the new calibre-portable application. When I opened the new calibre-portable application, the welcome wizard launched, and I answered the few questions. Then calibre opened fully, with my existing library and all the preferences and plugins that I had set in the previous version. I don't have to use the switch library function.

Things seem to be working fine. This is probably a "six vs half-dozen" way of doing things compared to the upgrade instructions. However, my reading of those instructions caused me to copy my library, which took a long time and ultimately didn't work well. It has seemed easier to move everything but that.

I essentially do the same thing, but for some reason I always delete the files inside the calibre folder then copy the new files to that folder. I also just copy and replace the calibre-portable application. I never touch my library or my calibre settings folder.

I have never had the welcome wizard pop up after upgrading. If you don't mess with your calibre settings folder there is no reason you should see this pop-up.

You read the upgrade instructions correctly. It does take longer to copy your library and your settings, but it should make absolutely no difference at all which way you choose to do the upgrade.
