PRS-T1 jumps out of e-book chapter to home screen

Just come across a weird glitch with my Sony PRS-T1 (unrooted and with latest firmware) .

Upon opening a specific epub, things are fine until I attempt to read any page in the first chapter of the book. Then the sony jumps out of the book and presents the home screen.

I managed to cure this by using Sigil to delete all the html lying between the <body> and </body> tags in the chapter. I pasted the deleted html into a Wordpad document and then copied it back to restore the chapter to its former state. But something must have changed, because the book now displays correctly in the PRS-T1. Maybe there were some unprintable characters in the original epub which caused the PRS-t1 grief? But searching using regex in Sigil didn't reveal anything unusual. So I'm a bit puzzled!

Can anyone shed light on this?

Either You are hitting some markup code that is being interpreted by the T1 software as a close command or a piece of bad code that triggers the same response... I have had similar weird happenings with the odd epub, I have fixed it by running the epub through calibre - convert to mobi then back to epub.....Using SIGIL is fine as long as you are confident you know what you are doing remember that any code checker will only report invalid code but not necessarily inappropriate code.. if that makes sense, so sigil may report all is fine.....the e-pub standard is very "loose" so you will encounter bad stuff now and then.....

Thanks. I created the problematic epub from a mobi file using calibre convert!
And, although it failed to display chapter 1 correctly on the PRS-T1, there was no issue with reading it using calibre or sigil.

Go figure...

Yeah.... different software will interpret the epub markups differently.. the standard needs to be tightened ,in your case seems like the fault is in the T1 interpreter rather than the epub itself but I have had epubs that opened in sigil, calibre and PC reader but still craped out on the T1

If you check the ePub with FlightCrew or ePubcheck it will tell you whether the ePub is valid, and if not where the problem is so you can fix it.

Have you considered asking on the ePub forum? I think the problem is almost certainly with the ePub, not with the reader.

If memory serves me right sigil uses flightcrew .....you are right for most of the epubs but you will come across the odd one that will pass all the tests and still crap out on the T1 when that happens I have found that running it through calibre can sometimes (sometimes)fix what is wrong, even if the original was converted by calibre....lol go figure, epub is basically a version of html .. anyone who does any web development will know that a page that displays 100% in explorer may not do so in firefox or chrome I am old enuff to remember the old netscape/explorer days when you sometimes needed to develop 2 versions of the site... to get it to work on both.. they tightened up the html standard , now most of those problems are gone and they need to do the same with the-pub format....
