Icon Row Dropdown
I've noticed with some disgust from time to time, not major disgust that the dropdown (secondary row) on the icon row of calibre disappears too quickly even when going through options added by the installation of plugin's. Isn't it possible to have it dropdown on hover or click but if the request by click on the dropdown again will have the secondary row recede? Cause I have a couple of plugin's that have drop down additions and when I select the drop down for a plugin, the menu recede's before I want it to.
Some times I speak nonsense so if I seem vague let me know. |

I have no idea what you mean. The toolbar expansion, which is what I assume you are talking about stays visible until you click on something. In any case you can re-organize the toolbar and even add a secondary always visible toolbar via Preferences->toolbars.

Once you select a dropdown menu it will not disappear unless you select something else or hover over a new menu item.

I don't know if this is what the OP is referring to, but I've experienced the same - or a related - problem myself.
On my PC, at the window size I run Calibre at, the menu bar isn't quite wide enough to display the "Preferences" button. If I click the ">>" at the end of menu bar to make it appear, "Preferences" appears at the left side of a second row of the menu bar. No problems there. The problem is that, of course, my mouse is at the right side of the window (having just clicked ">>") and "Preferences" is at the left side of the window, so I have to move the mouse across to the left to get to it. About half the time, during the process of moving my mouse across the "Preferences", the second row of the menu will spontaneously disappear again, and I have to repeat the process all over again. It sometimes takes 3 or 4 attempts to successfully get to "Preferences" without it disappearing! It's a trivial thing, but it's something that Calibre has always done for me. |

+1 on what HarryT said, I have had that happen too when I was recently experimenting with Toolbars when developing the Favourites Menu plugin. Not at my computer at the moment to verify the steps but it definitely happened a number of times as HarryT described and I assume is what the OP is referring to.

In any case here are 2 possible fixes for this.... First use smaller Icons for the tool bar buttons. (Preferences -> Look & Feel -> Tool Bar "Icon size") Second Remove the button names from the tool bar. (Preferences -> Look & Feel -> Tool Bar "Show text under icons") Both options will shink the displayed length of the tool bar so it may be that all the buttons are visible in 1 row. I have had the same problem as mesquite and HarryT. I think the problem is that the second row of icons will also disappear if you move the mouse outside the menubar. Now that I've worked out what I am doing wrong, i should be able to handle it better. But, having a minimum time for the menubar to be expanded or until something was clicked would make it easier.

Yes, if it was possible to make the second row of the menu stay visible until something was clicked, this would be a tremendous improvement. As I say, no big deal - just one of those "it would be nice to have" things.

It has been so long since I've had enough icons to cause a second row I completely forgot about this instance. There is a third work around. Use Preferences - Toolbar to edit your toolbars. Currently I put many options in the context menu or favorites plugin, (see attached) but previously I used the menu bar to supplement my main toolbar.

This behavior is hardcoded in the Qt toolbar class, so it isn't going to change. Use two toolbars, or resize the buttons so they all fit, or re-order them so that only rarely used ones are in the hidden area.
And note that you do not have to click the little arrow to show the popup. Just right click anywhere in the button. |

Any idea why it is, though, that the second row of the menu "closes up" again in this seemingly random manner? Its behaviour seems to be pretty arbitrary.
