The ability to remove the series number

A feature that I would love to see in calibre would be to have the option to remove the series number completely on some books in the library.
I have a large amount of academic history books in my library, and frequently University Press books have a series, but no series number (Palgrave Macamillan's The New Middle Ages, for example.) I currently set the series number to 0.00, but would love to have the option to have it show up as undefined, like can be done with the date published field (using the little recycle button.)

This is a "it would be nice to have" type of request, not a "I gotta have it, or my world is gonna end" request, so no huge rush.

Can't you do this already? Or maybe I've misunderstood what you mean...
  • Highlight a bunch of books from which you want to remove Series info.
  • Press the Edit Metadata button
  • Check the box labelled 'Clear series' (to the right of the 'Series' box, about halfway down)
  • Press OK

As I read the request, he wants series name only.. No digits allowed .

A custom column is what he wants (and can do )

Oops, sorry, it's been a long day. I'm going to stop unhelpfully trying to help, now.

@theDucks

You have the idea of what want, but I would love to be able to do that in the Series field, so that all of the books in my catalog have their series information in the same place. In an ideal world the ability to remove the series number would be on a record-by-record basis.
What would be perfect would be if there was a little green recycle button next to the series number field on the edit Metadata window that behaved like the ones on the series, date and publication date fields.

@jackie_w

thanks for the try

Good idea rlh3

This would also be a welcome 'nice to have' for me.

But rather than a Recycle button, maybe a check box between Series Name & Number would be better - see image. If the box is not ticked the Number field greyed out - as is the case if Series is blank. Default would be ticked.

I would also like to see an option in Right Click menu for Series in the Tag Browser to toggle Numbered/Not Numbered.

Similarly in Manage Series would need a Yes/No "Series is Numbered" column.

BTW What is the purpose of the 'Was" column in the Manage Series list ?

@BetterRed

Either way to get the functionality would be fine with me, I don't care how it is done, I would just like the ability to do it. Whatever is easier for the people doing the stuff that I have no clue about that makes the silly program do what we want it to.

If I am thinking of the column that you are thinking of (you get to it from the 'Alter Tag Browser' button) it is there to show you what the entry was before you modified it.

@rlh

I maintain Authors, Publishers etc via right click in the Tag Browser sections under the Tag Search box, I've only looked at the Tag Browsers button momentarily

But now I know why I sometimes get confused in these forums, Tag is a used as a generic label for Authors, Languages, Series, Publishers and Tags themselves!

Maybe TPTB could rename the Tags Tag to something like Keywords or change the generic use of Tag to something like Attribute or Property.

I recall my 7th grade English teacher telling me many many years ago

Quote:
Better Red,

Within the one essay, thou shalt not use different words with the same meaning, nor yet the same word with different meanings.

Now write than out 100 times before you go home - in copperplate script!
