Calibre launches The Gimp instead of PDF reader

hi everyone,

this is re: a potential bug on Calibre version 0.8.59 (a google search didn't give me any result on the matter). I'm using Calibre on PClinuxOS LXDE on an ancient laptop and connected to a Sony 650 e-reader, mostly for PDF articles.

When I try to open a PDF file from Calibre, The Gimp is launched. A window pops up asking if I want to "import" the PDF into The Gimp. I really don't want that: it uses up all my laptop's resources, etc. I want a PDF to be launched as a PDF. This was perfectly possible when I was on Xubuntu.

I know I could simply launch the very PDF file from my hard disk - the problem with Calibre (or the way I use it) is that it takes a number of connections with the Sony 650 before the titles/authors I assign to the PDF articles (on Calibre, when they do not automatically appear) gets "stable" and doesn't either disappear at the next connection or turns into some code extracted from the PDF itself - for example: the title of the article gets replaced with the name of the journal, etc...

can you please help? Thank you.

This appears to be an (your) OS file association problem.

Calibre will use its internal viewer for formats selected (Preferences: Behavior). For all others (not ticked), the OS must supply the viewer (and association to file type)

I appreciate that, except that file association on my OS appears to be all right: when I click on a PDF document, the OS automatically launches Evince Document Viewer (a Linux PDF viewer). I'm wondering if - by any chance - Calibre doesn't like Evince and it'd like Adobe much better if I set my OS to replace it Evince. Any idea?

Ubuntu Oneric has no problem with Calibre using the system default viewer (Evince 3.2.1)

you're right, also Xubuntu doesn't have any problem with that. I'm trying the PclinuxOS forum + will get back on this if they have a solution - just in case.
