For commercial books, Amazon.

For works in the public domain, PG (or archive.org)

You're forgetting other places for commercial eBooks such as Barnes and Nobles, the Sony book shop, Waterstones and other such Books on board online stores.

It certainly wasn't meant to be "mean". The poster asked "how do YOU search for books". I search at Amazon because I read on my Kindle. Naturally people who have other types of device are going to search elsewhere, but I'll leave them to answer for themselves.

Sometimes an author will offer (free or for sale) books from their own website. Kobo. Google Play. Smashwords. Public libraries. And just to be clear on the dalek's comment: PG is Project Gutenberg.

If you have a Kindle, listen to the Kindle users. If you have anything else, do not listen to Kindle users. This is because Kindles are incompatible with everyone else.
