DRM "Sniffer"

Does anyone know of an utility that would ferret out DRM protected books in a library directory on your computer?

I've imported all my *.AZW and comparable books into my Calibre library, and I can't use them across muliple platforms. I'd like to delete those specific book to have a residual of books DRM free in the library.

And, it's not as simple as opening each one to see, for I have over 12,000 books in the library. I've moved all the *.AZW books to a different directory, and I'd like to move those not DRM'd back to the Calibre directory.

A plugin? Another software producer? Anyone know?

Well, there's a plug-in that will remove DRM as the book goes in to Calibre, but we don't talk about that here. Google ApprenticeAlf for more information.

That AZW lark beats me, I don't get it at all....

See Kindle Books From Amazon Without DRM for a python script. It is very old, so it does not know about recent Kindle DRM however it actually detects DRM-free which probably has not changed. If you get "NOT MOBI" on an azw this may be a TOPAZ or perhaps an unrecognized MOBI format.

Don't start sniffing DRM. It's pretty toxic.

The quick and dirty way would be to try to convert them to another format in Calibre - the ones that are still DRMed will give you an error message to that effect.

You select some or all of the books, click on the convert icon and select a format to convert to. At the end of the batch you get a pop-up telling you that Calibre was unable to convert "X" books due to DRM. There is a details button that when clicked will give you the list of books that did not convert. I do a screen print of the titles so I can organize them later.

The Quality check Plugin for Calibre has a DRM (infested ) check. The advantage is it does not cause any books Modify flag to be bumped

AZW ebooks typically come from Amazon. If these are books that you, yourself, purchased from Amazon, then it's safe to assume that the vast majority of them will be DRMed. And you'll probably know for sure when you get finally round to reading them.

Awesome tip, thanks. I was able to go back and strip a bunch of books that I thought had already been done.
