Converting from .doc format to mobi

I've got loads of .doc format books, and when I try to convert to .mobi Calibre says it's an unrecognised format.
I can't find a plugin, is there a way to convert .doc files?

Once you have read the information at the link that kiwidude has posted, don't convert to Mobipocket. The best way to do it is to convert to ePub. The use Sigil to edit the ePub. Even filtered, the HTML from Word will be a nightmare and full of garbage. To get these .doc files to look good or even work, you'll want/need to fix the mess and ePub is the best format to do this with. Once you get the ePub cleaned up and working the way you want, then convert the ePub to Mobi or AZW3 (depending on what Kindle you have and what format you want).

That's the best way to go from a doc file to an eBook.

Thanks for that.
I opened the doc files in Openoffice Writer, saved as text files, then converted to mobi, results were spot on. Cheers for the help

The Wolf had the more correct idea. Convert to EPUB using writer (writer2EPUB plugin installed) so you lose little in the format and style..

Text output loses all text styling

No Bold? No Italic or underline?
You need the 'Rickitey olde Typewriter' font to give it some class
