In this book there is mention of a story told to a E V Lucas by a Naval Petty Officer about a poor man, turned down for a job as a lavatory attendant because he could not read. who bet a sixpence on a long shot and won at l00 to 1 odds and went on to become very rich. This reminded me of the Somerset Maugham short story The Verger. I wonder which came first, The E V Lucas story or the one by Somerset Maugham.
