which ports are used?

Hi,

I'm trying to use calibre at work, behind a firewall.

Whenever I try to download metadata (or access somethings such as a goodreads plugin), it times out - saying no connection.

I'm guessing its a port issue. If I know how the data is being routed, I can feed it through a SSH tunnel to my home PC - but doing this with 80 and 8080 hasn't solved the issue yet.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I suspect that it is more likely to be a proxy/firewall issue beacuse as far as I know the functions you mention use the standard HTTP port 80! Do you have to supply any credentials to get through your corporate firewall.

the firewall is pretty locked down - but there are no credentials passed from what I can tell.

I would have though that if an app uses port 80.. isn't that traffic seen as normal webpage type data? IF so, I can browse most sites without issue - so I wonder why the app-calls don't work?

It's possible that the proxy is only allowing access to specific websites or is blocking access to certain sites/IP blocks. Can you access the goodreads website using a web browser?

ahh, maybe I know why. We use a proxy configuration script to direct traffic. Most websites are open ... ie, no issue visiting reddit etc

But, do i need to set the config script address somewhere in a calibre setting perhaps? Shouldn't it just take the settings from the windows default?

thnx

I believe Calibre uses system default proxies but you could check via Preferences > Advanced > Miscellaneous.

interesting... it says 'no proxy used' on that page.

Not sure if thats good or bad... but wonder if calibre has its own proxy settings - I can't find them tho..

Are you using Windows? Try manually setting the proxy server via Internet Explorer instead of using the configuration script.

I believe that Calibre uses whatever proxy settings have been set up or Internet Explorer.

From the FAQ:
Quote:
How do I get calibre to use my HTTP proxy?

By default, calibre uses whatever proxy settings are set in your OS. Sometimes these are incorrect, for example, on windows if you don’t use Internet Explorer then the proxy settings may not be up to date. You can tell calibre to use a particular proxy server by setting the http_proxy environment variable. The format of the variable is: http://username:password@servername you should ask your network admin to give you the correct value for this variable. Note that calibre only supports HTTP proxies not SOCKS proxies. You can see the current proxies used by calibre in Preferences->Miscellaneous.
