New Calibre User

Hi everyone. I have just downloaded Calibre and it looks like it will do every thing I want just as soon as I figure it out. I have watched the video but I just cannot figure out how to get the books from Sony Reader Library and put them into Calibre. Could someone provide a step by step as if there is a way to screw it up, I will find it. I really look forward rearanging my books and getting them in some kind of order.

I'm not sure about copying them directly from Sony Reader Library, but you should be able to add them directly from your device, which calibre should detect soon after you plug it in to your computer.

Be aware that the Sony software can clash with calibre, so don't have them both open at the same time, (I eventually uninstalled the Sony software after getting an Adobe ID assigned to my reader, and now I only use calibre).

With calibre open and your reader detected, (as shown at the bottom of the calibre window), you should be able to drag-and-drop the books from your reader onto calibre's library area and it will add them. Try it with a single book to make sure that it works and to get an idea of how long it will take.

(Presumably if you know where the Sony software stores the books then you could drag-drop from there instead.)

Thank you for the help. I wonder if I could download to a flash drive and then to Calibre. Do you think that would make any difference or would the same systems incompatibility still apply?

The easiest way (I use a T1 & a 650/ 350, and a Bookeen, with Calibre and find it brilliant.)
is to just simply ignore/forget the Sony Reader guff - when the pop-up asking you what to do with this download appears, simply change the default to "Save to File" instead of "Open with Reader" or whatever it is.
Then when you hit go each time, it'll simply add the book to your list of d/loads before your very eyes - then just drag 'n drop from there into the Calibre library area.
Done.

If you don't try to use calibre and Sony Library at the same time then you shouldn't have any trouble. Just don't delete your books in the Sony library until you are sure that you have them all in calibre. You could download to a flashdrive first of all, which would give you a good backup and also allow you to add them to calibre without the reader connected.

Carpetmojo's idea looks like another viable option.

If you use the Sony Reader store on your desktop to load the books onto the computer, then this is the easy way to get your books into Calibre:

In Calibre, click on "add books", browse to the "My Documents" folder then to "My Books" and then to "Reader". Select the book title that you want to add to Calibre re, hit "open" (at bottom right of the browsing window) and the book gets added to Calibre without having to use any usb drives or loading back from the e-reader to computer.

First, I don't know anything about Sony. But, if your books are in a folder (usb stick, in the HDD), just open Calibre, open that folder, select all you want and drag them into Calibre.

So now that Cdesja5 has supplied this location I would go with Cdesja5's solution. It's the simplest and best.

One other suggestion. Don't switch back and forth using the Sony software and Calibre in sending books to the Sony Reader. Some versions of the Sony software want to sync the books on the reader and your computer. This can result in the Sony software trying to send files you don't want or duplicates.

Here is another silly question: Can this be done from my KT e-reader to calibre also? And if so, how?

Yes you can, exactly the same instructions apply.
When you use the Kobo site to download the Adobe DRM EPUB, the book is in your "my documents ", my digital editions folder.

I've been developing a small, limited online help file for calibre for a class - it's here - it might answer some of your questions and give you some ideas. Note that this is only an alpha draft, but I think all the links work and go where they're supposed to go. (well, there's a sound file that doesn't work, but I'm trying to figure out why)

Let me know if you have any questions that aren't answered there - I'm always looking for ideas for new content.
