Well, the slushpile may be diminishing in new stuff, but there's still occasional gems.
Razzmatazz, originally published as by Jack Early, now shown as Sandra Scoppetone.

Mystery, with a little harder edge than the books originally published under Scoppettone's name. Story has it that she felt that she wasn't being taken seriously because she was a woman author in a genre typically dominated by men at the time, and published this series under the Early name as a result. Maybe her fears were true, since the first in the Early series was nominated for an Edgar, and won a Shamus award. (The books aren't a serial series-- I'm referring to them as a series just to denote them as a subset of Scoppettone's wider body of work.)
The second in the series was offered back in March (Donato & Daughter), so if you got that one and enjoyed it, you shouldn't miss this one.
The other 2 in the series (Donato & Daughter , and award winner mentioned above, A Creative Kind of Killer), are available at $0.99. All very enjoyable reading in my opinion, and a bargain at that price-- especially considering the award-winning caliber.

Hey, for a little inter-threaduality/bit of trivia [see Prologue Books giveaways/Marijane Meaker, etc.] - just noticed Vin Packer actually reviewed 'A Creative Kind of Killer.'
(Not exactly a riveting take - just a little celeb-watching for me...)
