Are Nested TOCs Possible?
The user manual of the 505 does indeed incorporate this functionality. Is there a way to do this when setting up a file.

If you simply mean an entry in a TOC taking you to a different TOC then sure, no problem. Most of the "omnibus" books I've posted here how a top level "book index" TOC which takes you to the start of a book, then the book itself has its own TOC.

ok. Just curious, does anyone know what it is about a pdf that makes this possible? I mean, the pdf in a reader is converted to lrf format, so the lrf format must support this.
If that is the case, shouldn't it be possible to tap into that at conversion of other formats as well? - maybe fool the reader somehow. |

I don't see why you can't do it in other formats. Take HTML, for instance. A TOC is just a set of links to locations in a file. A nested TOC is one TOC with links to other TOCs, each of which have links to locations in the file.

The question here is about the Sony Reader. In the UI of the Sony Reader, you can have nested TOCs for PDF files. Jumping from page to page to access the right content, using an inline TOC is not a nested TOC. On the PRS-500/505 it's MUCH easier to access the TOC through the UI rather than with an inline TOC (faster with the 0-9 keys than with the joystick).

I was indeed referring to the TOC in the Sony UI.
So far, I'm understanding that nested (UI) TOCs can only be done in PDF, but if it is a feature of the Sony UI, couldn't it be invoked by other formats. My question still is: what makes pdfs work that way and nothing else can? 2nd question: is it possible to build a nested TOC pdf document just to navigate the contents and then have it link into another book (possibly in lrf format) within the reader? ----I kinda figured this one is a long shot, but worth asking. |

VikingDave:
A nested TOC is not possible in a Sony UI using only the buttons. However, the same functionality is available within an LRF file for the Sony by using the cursor to navigate the TOCs. Using one of Harry's Omnibus ebooks as an example, you have a main TOC that may list the titles of the books in the Omnibus. Clicking on one of these will bring you to another TOC for that specific book. Again you would use the cursor and select to go to one specific chapter. (I use this quite a bit when I'm reading Harry Sherlock Holmes Omnibus.) Now if Harry has set the name of each book to be a title, then it will show up in the Sony UI under the Contents area with a number to the right of each book. Push the corresponding button and you will be taken to that part of the Omnibus. The second TOC (the one for the single book within the Omnibus) cannot be navigated with the buttons and can only be navigated via the cursor. There is no ability that I have ever heard of that allows one file on the Sony to reference another file. |

Yes, it is, with a PDF file. You can also create nested TOC in epub files: when Adobe DE will be available on the PRS-505, it'll be another way to get nested TOCs.
Concerning those links pointing to other books: never heard about this on the Sony. In theory, it's possible with Mobipocket files, but it only works with Mobipocket Reader on Windows, not on the Cybook or on the Kindle. |
