Sainsbury's buys e-book retailer
"Sainsbury's is entering the digital books marketplace, with the announcement that it is buying HMV's stake in Anobii, an online retailer of e-books, for just £1."
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-18406262 Sainsbury's is a long-established grocery/supermarket chain in the UK. Never heard of Anobii, but the price suggests they're in a hole with debt. Can't help but feel that Sainsbury's would have had more traction just setting up using their own name. |

Anobii is a joint venture between Random House, Penguin and Harper Collins to establish a direct to consumer ebook store.
LINK Somehow I think they are financially A-OK. Dunno why Sainsbury signed on to that though. |

So....just another ebook shop, with a bit of a forumy feel to it.
Most ebook buyers in the know won't have time to "rate, review, share and discuss their choices" - they're too busy doing all that and lots more on MobileRead ! ![]() [Note to Mod's : commission payments to charity please..... ![]() |

Good for them.
The more the merrier. Competition is good. Maybe the supermarket crowd can bring something fresh to ebook retailing. ![]() |

Sainsbury may be just there to provide investment funding. I can't see them performing any other role.

Agreed - difficult to think of anything "new" that could be brought to flogging ebooks, as Pottermore claimed to have done, but news on that seems to have gone quiet lately.

They claim 60,000 books. That's like a convenience store vs. a full market. Can a site with 60,000 books claim to be a serious player?

![]() Most (non-english-speaking) countries, 60K ebooks would be anywhere from a great start to seriously impressive. For the UK it would be...suboptimal... to stay there for long but if they intend to expand rapidly it might suffice for a launch phase. |

They could be waiting for the DOJ and EU investigations and suits to be resolved.

I guess it depends on where it is targeted, or the kinds of books they plan to sell. If it were in the US, I couldn't say it's a "serious player", but it could become one if it does all the right things and gets support.
