converting large pdfs

I have a very large (close to 3000 pages) pdf that I'd like to convert to be able to read either on my kindle4 or my Sony 350. There are tables, and I know tables don't tend to convert well to mobi, but I'm not sure whether the 350's screen will be large enough to view the tables either.

Is there any guideline on how long it should take to convert such a large file? calibre has been churning away for aboug 15 minutes, with no sign of being done. I'm going to let it go over night, but is there any way to tell whether calibre is actually converting it or is just stuck in some sort of loop?

If the file is too big for calibre to work on, are there other tools that are better to use with very large documents like this? We're going to have a lot of them, but I'd rather read them on an eink device than try to read and keep track of them on a computer screen.

Till it is done or crashes. That big could take over a day (24hrs) since it is not a simple file to start.

Thanks, theducks. It took almost all night. I haven't gone back into the file to see if the tables converted ok - the file size is daunting.

hey, is this a time to use a regular expression, to go through the mobi (or epub) file and convert borders="0" to borders="1"? if so, how do I set that up?

(I am so not a programmer. I'm just exploring recipes so I can download comics to my husband's kindle, but I *think* I know how to edit the gocomics recipe so he'll only get the ones he wants.)
