EReader owners are more likely to buy and read books...

Interesting graphic...

U.S. consumers with an e-reader or tablet are more likely to read and buy books than those without an e-book compatible tech device, a new infographic suggests:

http://mashable.com/2012/06/01/e-reading-trends/

What do you think? Do you read more ebooks then print? Has the ebook life changed your reading habits? Dos this hold true in the rest of the world?

Numbers look pretty reasonable to me. I definitely read more since buying my first ereader and I've bought a hell of a bunch more books (as well as free and public domain books).

And yes way more ebook than pbooks now.

i suppose it makes sense. if you're in the market to buy one of these newfangled cyber books, chances are you're going to use it. you're kind of forcing the issue of reading by buying one.

Well, yes. Ereaders, at least unrooted, provide a very distraction-free environment that conducts to good bouts of uninterrupted reading.

I read about half and half, but usually the same titles. It varies depending on my locale.

There is no doubt that I've increased my reading since buying an e-reader. In fact, I read at least 50%-75% more than when I was reading paper books. Unfortunately for authors, I now read a lot more 'free' books, and only purchase about 10% more than before.

Stitchcawl agree - the ebooks that I have now stocked up on are Classics, and Reference, all free.

I very rarely buy an ebook, and I still use my public library as the main source of my reading material.

It holds 50% true for me. I'm definitely reading much more again since I bought my eBook reader. However, I'm investing more in having my personal library (encyclopaedias and such) scanned than in buying new books.
Side notes: I'm 'freeloading' a ton of e-books too because I have them on paper already so I don't think I'm stealing in any proper sense of the word. Paying for an ebook doesn't frighten me at all unless a bad digital copy approaches the scanning cost, in which case I prefer to pay someone to have some real work done.

Last edited by MrWarper; 06-04-2012 at 06:17 AM. Reason: didn't mean to say "a [good] quality digital copy" - that wouldn't make sense

I buy, borrow, and read a rather large number of ebooks. For me the eink reader and the corresponding digital books are two of the greatest inventions ever. If I'd have had one as a kid, I'd have been soooo happy. As it was, my mother paid for my reading habit, and frankly, I'd have gotten more books for less with ebooks. I re-read so many books as a child/teenager, simply because we didn't live very close to a library, and I had a limited number of books.

1. Yes, I read much more ebooks than pbooks.
2. My ereader has changed my reading habits (I read more) and my shopping habits (I have not bought a pbook in ages).
3. By "rest of the world" I assume outside USA. I'm not sure the original premise holds true. Here there are few sources of legit ebooks (just Amazon and a local merchant) and pirated ebooks are very easy to get.

I got my first ereader (Kindle 2) in Nov 2009 and a Kobo (Original) in May 2010. Before those, I read (books) rarely -- 1 or 2 a year. But pretty much from Day One my interest in reading has rekindled (rekoboed?) and I have been reading about a book a week, mainly mystery / crime fiction. It's been a terrific distraction from TV, the net and other pursuits. It also means I am actually buying books (ebooks anyway) which means I am back in the, um, good books of publishers.

My reading habits have definitely changed. I read tonnes as a child, but after high school my love of reading really dwindled, and I went from reading about twenty books a year to reading about two books a year. (That's what you get for being forced to read five terrible books a year and write essay after essay on them, I guess...). Even so, though, I was still collecting an obscene number of books - so I would end up with huge stacks of paper books that I wanted to "eventually" read.

Since getting my Kindle, I'm reading so much more. I really think that I'm going back to my childhood reading habits of about 20 books a year (I know that isn't much, but I'm dyslexic, so it takes me a little while to read a page ). Well, not yet - but once I've gotten back into the swing of reading all the time, I'll get there!

I'm also spending lots less money on ebooks. I'm banned from my city's library (my library card was stolen and they wouldn't believe me when I said I'd never even heard of the books that they were asking me return... Seriously, who steals books from a library?), but I download a ridiculous amount of public domain books, and buying direct from the author or publisher is so much cheaper than buying through a retailer.

I have a much bigger to-read list since buying my ereader, because everything is so much more readily available. Seriously, how will I ever get through ~300 books?!

Yes. If you look at the link I posted the survey is about the American market so I was wondering if the same applied elsewhere. Thanks!

Pirated ebooks are very easy to get here in the US also which makes the results of this survey interesting since some are adamant that you can't possibly compete with free. Perhaps adding value by allowing readers to browse and download books directly to your ereader has something to do with it.
