Question Suddeny can't get documents to Fire

I have emailed and called Amazon CS several times. They are stumped, and promise to research it and call back, but never have.

I have been sending Word .doc files to my Fire by USB and by email with no problem at all ever since I got it. Yesterday I tried to send some by email and USB, and there is a problem.

In the past, the documents I send appear in the DOCs "folder" on the Fire. I tap one and it immediately opens with fill screen text. The ones I moved by USB yesterday are weird; if I tap one, it opens Quickoffice, and that has a box that states, "File Can Not Be Opened."

Then I sent five by email, and I got five emails back saying the documents I sent could not be opened. None of those appeared in the DOC folder on the Fire.

I tried all sorts of things, nothing seemed to help. Then, I finally noticed something. The ones I sent before that work, have no extensions. However, the ones I dragged over to the Fire have a .doc extension, such as file.doc. That, I assume is why they open in Quickoffice. Why that won't open them I can't figure out, nor can Amazon CS.

All I can figure out is that for some reason, they are not being converted as in the past. I even tried saving as a .rtf and sending via USB, but they did not even show up.

If nobody else in the universe is having this problem, perhaps it is something wrong with my Fire (it was a refurb, but everything else works perfectly, including the older documents I sent). Go figure.

Any ideas?

Make sure you are saving your docs to a format it can read. I know the newer office has more compatibility issues. Try saving as 2003 document and see if that works.

Can you open the docs on your PC and read them? Something could be corrupting them.

If you just use your "email address @ kindle .com" they will convert for the eiInk Kindles. My address for the Kindle Fire has "email address_38 @ kindle.com."

Also, try sending them as a "DOCX" FILE. That is how I send them.

I have been emailing them with the same address, both free and paid, and I just get an email back stating "The following document, sent on Sat, Jun 02, 2012 GMT could not be delivered to the Kindle you specified"

I am doing everything exactly as I have done successfully for months, but now all of a sudden it won't work. Nor will it be converted when i try dragging them over via the USB cable.

Blossom, I can open the docs on the PC with no trouble. Also, I have converted them with several different types of Word, all to no avail.

What bugs me and Amazon CS is that I am doing everything exactly as have in the past with no trouble, but now it won't work either by USB or email.

It is failing to convert somehow.

I can still download books with no trouble, so don't think it is the Fire itself. Something must be wrong with my .doc files, but what?

BTW, I was able to send .txt files OK, but they don't open in exactly the same format, nor can I search for anything in them.

It could be your email program. Let's try uploading the doc instead using Send to Kindle add on.

What version of Word are you using?

Try resending a old doc that you know worked before on the Fire and see if it still works.

If you are getting bounce back messages in your email it's not the Fire as it never reached it but it could be several of things on your end or something on Amazon's end.

That may be the problem. The email address for eInk Kindles is DIFFERENT from the one for the Kindle Fire. Does your document arrive at your eInk Kindle in good shape?

Thanks, Blossom and sirmaru, for all the suggestions.

I did try several times sending the docs that previously went there OK (some were revised, hence the need to send again), but still no joy. However, when I turned on my Kindle-1 whispernet, they all showed up. Go figure.

So, the only thing I did not think to try was to send them on the free email address. Sure enough, I got back the emails with a link to convert to .azw. I then dragged all those via USB, and finally, they showed up. Problem half-solved. Still, why could I not email
directly?

I use Lotus Wordpro (yeah, I know, but used it for years and no reason to go to Word), and it is very easy to convert docs to any of the several versions of Word that program lists (as well as .txt, and other types). The version I have been using for years for the Kindle-1 worked perfectly, as it did for the Fire for two months.

So, I tried each of the six versions, none of which worked. Then I downloaded the trial version of Word 2010 with .docx, and lo and behold, theat worked for sending by email. Problem 3/4 solved.

Why the ver 2000 and others did not work, I could not understand. But, and this is weird: after sending the .docx successfully, I went back and tried one of the older version that did not work before, and now it does. Freaky.

So, problem 100 percent solved. I'm a genius. If only I knew what the hell I did to fix it.

Interesting development. I had called Amazon CS last Friday, and after numerous futile attempts to fix my problem by the "higher level tech," he promised to research it and get back to me yesterday..

No call, but just got one early this morning. He said that after some investigation by the development team, they "refreshed the system" and that should have corrected the problem."

So, I guess i did not fix it after all. In any event, I am back in business sending docs to the Fire.
