Book Places in the Digital Age
http://aaupdigitaldigest.wordpress.c...e-digital-age/
An interesting blogpost about the future of the "book place" in the ebook age. The author of the post, Tony Sanfilippo, is a publisher, who imagines that in the future, bookstores will: use POD technology, also sell used books, rent books as well (this is a new one), and sell books on consignment (a radical departure from the current model). Putting his money where his mouth is, he's sent some books to be sold on consignment to a struggling book store in California. The idea of a rental club is interesting. I'd personally be interested in that, because my local library doesn't have a lot of the books I want. |

Selling on consignment is not, in itself, anything new simply an extension of the widely used SoR (Sale or Return) model where B&M shops get stock on lower discount than firm sale and can freely return unsold stock which is then credited against their account...

In a sense, Amazon already sells ebooks and perhaps pbooks on consignment. On the surface of things, it appears that the digital allows for an infinite number of texts to be sold. But it does not allow for the same number? to be displayed. So an interface must be created, hopefully suited to the individual user, geared toward the transfer of monies from one account to another.

Book Places will be places where people go to look at books -- not read them. They will be full of showcases of valuable books plus 'touchies' that people can thumb through. They will sell coffee and e-readers and a small selection of books for collectors (I'll be prowling for a copy of The Ghost of Opalina or Nine Lives).
People will not pay to visit, but coffee and snacks will be expensive and there will be a donation canister as well as memberships that promise to treat patrons to sneak peaks and private events. I can't wait! |
