Honoré de Balzac: A Daughter of Eve
(Une Fille d’Ève)
Translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley.
Revised by another.
A short novel of nearly 41,000 words.
The novella, ‘Honorine’ showed how the bigoted Comtesse de Granville destroyed all hope of domestic happiness for her husband. This novel shows the effects on her daughters, but can be read on its own.
Marie de Vandenesse has escaped an upbringing of arid and bigoted religiosity by marrying Comte Félix de Vandenesse. But this upbringing leaves her vulnerable to an unexpected passion for Raoul Nathan, a low-born journalist. Matters come to a head when she tries to raise money to pay his debts…
I have corrected some textual and translation errors, reformatted and restored accents and italics, adding a TOC.
