Wifi sideloading? Help me help a friend

I'd like to get an ereader for friend who I think would enjoy it.

I'm 99% sure that I want to get him a basic Kindle, because I want to be able to email content directly to his reader for him.

Does any other affordable reader have this feature beside the Kindle?

A second question, which may be better posted in the flea market, but I'll take a chance: Can anyone help me acquire said reader for a really low price or some kind of barter? I wish I had the kind of money where I could drop $80 on a casual gift for a friend, but I don't.

Others, who will be along shortly, might correct me if I am wrong but I beleive that all of the Kindle models can do the email to the kindle not just the basic one. Make sure that you are ok with the add supported nature of the device and the fact that its not touch screen.

Oh indeed all the Kindles can, but I'm looking for ways to spend LESS than the basic Kindle, not more!

If you can't afford to give the gift, then don't. The recipient would also need a cover, and possibly a book light, which would add to the expense. You are probably not going to find an ereader much cheaper than the basic Kindle.

Wow. Thanks, that was no help at all. It's probably good advice if I was a child of yours who needed help managing finances, but as an adult looking to acquire a used or refurb device as a favor for a friend, it just reads as insulting.

Perhaps a used or re-furbished basic kindle but beyond that I would look to spend what the basic kindle costs. I dont not think that you can go lower.

I'm definitely leaning that way, I'm just surprised with all the wifi enabled devices, there are so few that let you use the wifi to load your own content. I thought perhaps some of the lesser known brands might be an option.

Unfortunately the "lesser known brands" are, without exception (AFAIK) all more expensive than the Kindle. Nobody can compete with Amazon on cost grounds.
