Libraries - UK & US problems....

From the Independent today - Tim Coates (former Waterstones owner) is in negotiations with US libraries, but just can't hack it with those in UK.

[ I've just remembered, the library I spent a huge amount of time in, for my early years from around 4 to probably 14, was one of the original Carnegie Libraries, God bless him. ]

This move comes as little surprise.

At present local libraries are supported by communities who are being targetted themselves: students; the unemployed; older people...

And literacy doesn't seem to be particularly high on the agenda for cash-strapped councils. Many local libraries in London have high turnovers, with a large number being staffed by part-timers, trainees and volunteers.

I guess it comes with being part of the Big Society.

Haven't we dropped that now ? That was the Witch's punchline wasn't it ?

I think now we're in the " You're all in it together" lala land, aren't we ?

[ Wonderful amount of hurrumphing and looking at shoes when Milliband asked all those on front bench who were better off to put their hands up ! ]

Re The Big Society... Well I think David Cameron picked that one up and ran with it when the proverbial started hitting the fan.

And one might argue that the hurrumphing signified a general consensus that they were "all in it together".
