Ancient History freebies..
This for history/archeaology buffs.
I googled to see if "Ancient History of Britain" was e (yes, "10.99 Amazon) when I noticed quite a few freebies, "Anglo Saxon Britain" and others for example, so worth a quick peep. |

If you're referring to Anglo Saxon Britain by Grant Allen, when the description includes "This book was converted from its physical edition to the digital format by a community of volunteers. You may find it for free on the web. Purchase of the Kindle edition includes wireless delivery", iit usually means that it's a copy of a book from Project Gutenberg that's been converted to Kindle format.

If you are referring to freebies from google books, my experience has been that they are so poorly formatted that they are really not worth the trouble, as they require lots of time in sigil to make them presentable.

Google books are often not that well done. Gutenberg is another story. The early plain vanilla texts may not be elegant but they are proofread with care. Various formats (machine converted) are available, free, and have been for a long time. i was scanning and ocring for Gutenberg back when it was dos whatever, and the only etexts easily available were from them. Used to read on the desktop as that was better than no books at all. At that time we used to produce for french texts one version without accents and another with accents done in brackets like this *de(/)ja(\)* so everyone could read them on any computer however primitive. Please remember this was done way back when we used slow dialup and paid by the kilobyte. I used to drive to town to get the scan done onto floppies, as scanners cost too much to buy. Yeah, OK, I'm old.

Yeomen of Literature
Once upon a long-ago time, a time of DOS and other magical collections of bits, people like you began to replicate the labors of the Medieval monks who saved western civilization. Times and OS's have changed but little done today would be done without you who went before.
Thank you. |
