Instead of " it gives me a weird box...

Hello all! Title says it all to be honest. Loving Calibre as a library and converter but there seem to be a couple of epubs that get converted badly and give me a box instead of "..." signs.

These boxes with crosses in them show up in Coolreader, Aldiko and several other android apps.

I have tried various settings but am unable to find the right one... too many features for my own good probably.

Can anyone help me out?

dot dot dot also called 'hellip'
Code:
somewhere there is a codepage mis-match/lack of support.

If they look ok in the Caliber viewer or others on you PC, then the Android is at odds.

So other then a diffrent version of Android or it will never change? Nothing tweakable in Calibre to change this?

The Codepage is like telling the device: I speak German, but the attached file is Arabic.
We can't guess where the error is.

That is your job (maybe trial and error), to override the Character encoding auto-detection in Conversion: look and feel and see what works

Have you ever seen ... correctly rendered on you android?
The board converted my entity code: & hellip ; <no spaces

Well the Basic hash mark (the one over the 3 on the keyboard) should never give problems as it is basic ASCII

You will need a HEX (value capable) editor to see what that character is encoded as.

...
And neither are the single and double tick marks ( " ' ) often used for quote marks in plain text. The true quote marks ( ‘ ’ “ ” ), known as "typographer's quote marks" or "curly quotes", do often pose problems when encoding is incorrectly tagged in a file or when the conversion program is miss configured.

Thanks for the help all, figured it out by just using a mobi file and encoding that to epub. Now everything shows up perfectly. Not sure what the source is using to encode the epubs but I just need to remember to use the mobi ones.

Thanks for the help though!
