Once I have purchased an e-book from Amazon, am I able to have it sent to my Fire as an audiobook? Or does it need to originally say it is an audiobook?

Audibles can't be sent to the Kindle Fire. You need to use the Audible app for that. It's a great app you can actually sort by chapters with it. I have their cheapest plan and it's well worth it if you like Audiobooks.

I have their cheapest plan also - the one that's free because you didn't renew your membership. You still get full access to your account, the ability to get free audiobooks when offered, and full use of the app.

$14.95 is the plan I have for one free credit a month. I never thought I would be a audiobook fan then I discovered Stephanie Plum and how entertaining audiobooks can be. I'm currently listening to Plum Lucky which amazes me how many voices these narrators can do.

Do you load the audiobooks directly into the Fire, or into your computer & then transfer? I was trying to find some free audiobooks to try everything out; but have not found any other than the library. Thanks for your suggestions above.

If from the library, you can only load MP3 audiobooks. WMA audiobooks are not supported by the Fire and most other Android devices. Download to your computer using OverDrive Media Console. Then connect your Fire and follow the prompts.

Audible audiobooks can be purchased and loaded through the app. No cable needed.

This is what I use. I just download directly to my Fire. It works great!

The Audible app for Audible books by Amazon is a nifty app. I like how you can go through chapters just like in a book.

For WMA Audiobooks I recommend getting a Sansa Clip Zip and use that instead. In fact it will play WMA, MP3 and Audible books.

More specifically, Overdrive WMA audiobooks have DRM developed by Microsoft. Which means you need to be running Windows and you can't download them with a Mac OS.

Many can be converted for iPods using OverDrives software.

Of course anything audio can be converted with certain software through the "analog hole".

It's not quite as easy to set up as Alf and Calibre makes it for ebooks, but 'not an option' would be...umm..wrong.
(And of course, you'd be on your honor to delete them after your loan period, just as you are with borrowed mp3 music.)
