Need a little help
I don't know where to post this one. Hope I'm not too much
![]() I'll have a litter this year and want to give the puppies fairy tales character's names. In France, we have to stick to a letter per year and this year is H (for the first letter of the name). As whippet is an english breed, I like to give english names to my puppies. In fact, I totally lack fairy tale culture, at least english fairy tales... I search the web, but got lost... So it's not really litterature, but still, it's related. Any suggestion would be welcome (and if you could rely the name with the tale it comes out, it would be wonderful ![]() ![]() |

The only H fairy tale names I can think of offhand are Hans (Clever Hans) and Hansel (Hansel and Gretel).

Harry as in Potter, but I might be the only one who defines those books as fairy tales.
Another one is off course Henrietta, but I am not entirely sure if that is only in the Danish original. |

There are plenty if you look to mythology.
Hera, Hercules, Hephastus (sp) all come to mind. |

I haven't read them, but Project Gutenberg have several books about English Fairy tales.
But if you don't find any names, how about picking a name from Celtic Mythology? |

Henny-Penny, perhaps (the sky is falling).
Several of Joseph Jacobs's collections of fairy tales, including a volume of English fairy tales, are available at Project Gutenberg--maybe that would help. Also the Andrew Lang fairy tale collections, also at PG, might give you some names. P.S. Jacobs includes a story about a woman named Habetrot (Habetrot and Scantlie Mab). Lang has Prince Hyacinth (Prince Hyacinth and the Dear Little Princess) and Helena (Prince Fickle and Fair Helena). Last edited by Catlady; 02-24-2012 at 04:59 PM. Reason: added P.S. |

Not much help but all I can think of are Humpty Dumpty, Handy Pandy, and Happy from Snow White and the Seven Dwarves!

Technically Welsh, but Henwen was an oracular pig (probably best known from Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles books) from some old legends who got incorporated into the Arthurian tales.
There's a tiny handful of other H-named characters from King Arthur which are listed on Wikipedia, including a dog named Husdent, who was owned by Tristan (of "and Isolde" fame), which seems like it would be very fitting for a theme-named puppy. |

One word that I have run across is: Hob for a mischievous sprite? I don't know of a specific story, but I am pretty comfortable that it belongs in the milieu of the sidhe, dryads, and other similar beings.
When I was looking it up, I ran across reference that hobbit predated Tolkien and was related to 'sprites and bogies'. Anyway, it seems that Hob would be an appropriate name for a mischievous pup. |

Quote:
For specific fairy tale characters who are more like named creatures instead of individual-personage names, there's the English tale of The Hedley Kow and The Tale of the Hoodie from Scotland, which turns out to be a kind of crow. Hope this helps. |
