A distinct disadvantage
Ok, so we all know about the different advantages of e-books. I thought it might be interesting to take look at a distinct disadvantage of e-books. This is something we won't be able to do with our electronic books.
Enjoy! The disadvantage |

You also can't use ebooks in the lavatory in emergency - or save your life with a fire in the depths of winter in the ozarks (?).

The batteries run out on the reader at the most inopportune times.
You can't read on airplanes during takeoff and landing. Unless you break the DRM you can't move the books to a new reader. It's harder to browse through your library at book spines for a reread. The software is getting better though, so I don't expect this one to last much longer. Greg Weeks |

You can't throw it at your husband and expect to do any damage to him. You can't leave it sitting around to impress friends by leading them to believe you actually read the book.

But it's a lot easier to search for a specific book. If, like me, you have a house full of books, it's often not easy to lay your hands on a book you know you have, but you're not sure where it is.

They're just computer files, so you can't sell them or brag about how valuable they are.

The e-book has the potential to be Orwell's memory hole. Paper books stay written, if someone comes out with a whitewashed version, it is easier to tell what was the original version.
E-books place an added cost on readers, which could be several hundred dollars for a large family. No technology is required for reading paper books. There are some people you may not want to give an e-reader to, such as small children or prisoners. If I want you to read something as opposed to you wanting me to read something, a paper book may make more sense. A church might continue to stock paper bibles for a very long time, for example. One advantage of paper books is that your bookshelf tells people who you are. You can learn a lot about someone by the books on their shelves. If there are no paper books, then the living rooms of readers look just like that of non-readers. I have been in the houses of people who have no books, and I find it a bit creepy. However, I do suppose some might find it a disadvantage for people to know what books you are reading. With paper books, you can give them away when you are done with them, and you can buy used books. Without the secondary market, the effective cost of e-books is higher than it is for paper, as you pay full price for all the e-books. Of course, you have to consider all the PD books that you don't have to pay for at all in e-book format. |

I wonder if he can copyright these works of art? Can you copyright something made of copyrighted material? |

Incredible carvings!
on a somewhat pretentious note, one advantage of paper books for the author is they give you tangible, artisan-like end-point for the writing process. as you finish drafts and move towards printing, the craft takes over, and there's something really satisfying about it. with an ebook it's a bit of a flop. I don't know whether this might actually CHANGE the way we write, but that craft element is certainly something I used to look forward to. JB |

My e-reader doesn't show me the cover and byline at the beginning of every reading session. Consequently, I have a hard time remembering the names of authors I've newly discovered.
