Kindle Fire: The Missing Manual - A Real Disappointment
I have been a long time fan of O'Reilly's Missing Manual series of books - and have found them chock full of useful information that had significantly lowered my blood pressure in times past ....

until I read Kindle Fire: The Missing Manual

This was a real disappointment ... and I can say truthfully I learned only 1 thing after reading the entire thing. It is an extremely superficial "dumbed down" description of self-evident settings that reads more like a 300 page advertisement for Amazon. If you took all the little paragraphs from the Amazon Manage Your Kindle page and put them in a book ..... you guessed it. There is virtually no information on the Android OS ... only lots & lots of tips to help you buy more & more at Amazon. They did include a link to tested.com for the article on sideloading non-Amazon apps.
This is truly a pathetic "non-instructive" book that O'Reilly should be ashamed to publish.

The folks here at MobileRead have compiled vast amounts of truly useful information for the Fire - that should have been in this book!

That is pretty much the problem though - That it's an Amazon Powered device meant for Amazon media consumption. It's less about Android, more about Amazon.

But thanks for letting us know to give it a miss. .

Thanks for the heads up. I've noticed that O'Reilly manuals have been declining in quality for some time compared to their comprehensive coverage in the past. I think they're trading on their brand name rather and rushing to press. Too bad.

That doesn't mean the author has to produce a advertisement for Amazon packaged as an instructive manual. While the Kindle was built for Amazon stuff, I have read this author's books on other products and they weren't like that. Very disappointed in him. His books on Apple products weren't written like ads for Apple, they were full of new tips and tricks. I had already decided to skip it but I'm still annoyed.

I have to take my last rant back. I have no idea what the author of Kindle Fire the Missing Manual has written or not written. I was thinking of David Pogue's books. Sorry
