Senate sneaks in SOPA under a new name

"After trying to adopt Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA), both pieces of legislation turned out to be a disaster, causing outrage among Internet giants and ordinary users alike. Congress had to retreat. However it's determined to get what it wants this time.

The rebuttal to push Internet-regulating legislation has transformed into a new cybersecurity bill. The particulars of the latest attempt by senators to censor the Internet have not been disclosed to the public.

However some leaks suggest that the bill will grant the authority to crack down on the Internet to the executive branch of power, namely the White House. It looks highly possible taking into consideration that the legislation has to come out of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, chaired by Connecticut Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman.
The same Lieberman who earlier co-sponsored the so called Kill Switch bill that could allow the president of the United States to "declare a cybersecurity emergency," and practically shut down the Internet. "

If the article author does turn out to oppose the bill, would it be fair to take into consideration that he or she was against it even before reading it? No, but that is exactly the way Sen. Lieberman is treated here.

They'll just keep bringing this legislation back under the guise of protecting us from terrorists, protecting the children, protecting the troops, letting teachers, firefighters and policemen keep their jobs, stopping the flow of jobs overseas...

Can't say I'm surprised... this is, after all, how Congress has functioned for decades: If they want it, sooner or later, they'll get it passed by attaching it to something else.

The only real surprise is they didn't get it passed the first time. Too much money has been spent on this to just roll over and forget about it.

True; Bur Congress is also very much into PR, and if a critical mass of the public complain about a law in the system, Congress wants it to look like they care about the public's opinions. Then they'll wait until some other crisis catches everyone's attention, and vote the law in under the radar.

I think that they are making a mistake. It just draws more attention to the issue and more support for groups like Anonymous. Don't they have better things to do with their time?

Hmmmm... Doesn't the enforcement of ALL laws fall to the justice department which is in fact part of the executive branch?

Unnecessary hyperbole doesn't help the cause.

No one should be surprised that Congress will, at some point, put together another anti-piracy / cybersecurity bill.

At the same time, unless you believe the status quo is perfect, and lawmakers 5-10 years ago perfectly anticipated current situations, you should expect these laws to change.
