Last WWI vet has passed away, age 110

The great-grandmother signed up to the Women's Royal Air Force (WRAF) 93 years ago in September 1918, when she was aged just 17.

She was the last surviving person to have served in WWI following the death of British-born sailor Claude Choules in Australia last year.

During the First World War she worked at Narborough Airfield and RAF Marham, Norfolk, as an Officer's Mess steward.

Mrs Green, who was born in London, lived with her daughter May, 90, in King's Lynn, Norfolk, but had moved into Briar House care home shortly before Christmas where she died on Saturday.

She was also the sixth oldest person in the UK. Amazing lady!

Sadly it won't be too much longer until we are saying the same thing about World War II vets.

When I was a child, I spent part of my summers and most winter school breaks visiting my maternal grandparents. They farmed in rural Kansas about forty miles from the Nebraska line. The closest real town was a place called Clay Center.

I remember eating with my grandfather at the foreign Legion hall, and going to the small barber shop (which was always pretty full.) Frequently at the barber shop there would be one of about three old men my grandfather knew who had fought in the first world war, and then served in the Navy during the second world war.

Those three guys are still my heroes. I guess north central Kansas was as far from the sea as they could get.

Too True! Here in Canada, there's a project going on to collect the stories of WWII and Korean War vets before we loose them forever.
