Is there anything in Calibre that can fix long file names automatically?

Is there any plug in that will automatically trim all file names down to a more reasonable size? Or flag or hi-light all filenames longer than x?

My backup program is giving me fits due to a horribly long file name and the path which is actually short. I'm getting tired of dealing with excessively descriptive filenames also. Hellow people, we have these things called tags....

Calibre already manipulates file names to meet Windows Limited path length.
I suggest placing/moving your library to a place as close to root ( c:\ ,d:\ ...)
that your security permits without disabling Security (UAC or other) .

A really long username (logon name) like: 'Donald A. Wollheim', will cause path name length problems sooner. (NB changing the username in Windows 7 does NOT change the underlying folder name. Ever .)
You need to create a NEW user to get a new user folder (an a total fresh slate., losing access to bookmarks and other personal items)

Calibre uses the following naming convention for its internal library:
Quote:
/<authors>/<title> - <authors> (<id>)/<title> - <authors>.<ext>
I don't really see how you can categorize the above as "excessively descriptive".

Multiple authors. Title that includes long description. I would think it is impossible to exceed the limit but it is happening.

My backup folder's total path (was) 6 characters longer than the calibre library path and that slight difference was causing errors on backup as path lengths exceeded the maximum allowed value.

I was hoping for something I could click and set the limit to say 200 characters and have it trim every file name in the library to that limit. Or I could limit the filename to the first listed author and not the description.

My fix today is to change the calibre library path so it is longer than the backup path.

I have had this problem when backing up my library with added books that have especially long file names.
I have since learned to trim the names manually when editing the metadata and being done with it. That way I can name the book whatever I want.
