Which memory card?
I've nailed down a few things about the iLiad's expansion capabilities which are definitely good to know. Things like how it can't use the newer iterations / sizes of cards in some of the slots it possesses. Handy little tidbits that frankly seem like landmines which are guaranteed to trip anyone who doesn't do research in advance. So here I am.
Basically, I'm looking to get a large memory card. That seems to mean it's not going to be a MMC card, as those appear to be limited to 1GB. In fact, all of the available slots, plus the USB port, seem to be leftovers from Y2K. So be it. I'm also going to be trying to make sure that the memory access speed affects the performance of this device as little as possible. In fact, that's my chief goal here. The fastest flash card access possible, so that the turning of pages is as quick as possible. I'll be turning a lot of ~300+ KB pages. It already seems like compactflash is the only way to go, with a 4GB card (not drive) being a probable choice. But I'm trying to factor in the speed. So I could be dead wrong. Anyone want to chime in on what they use, or what their experience has been with regard to this aspect of their iLiad? |

I really cannot see you needing anything larger than one gig of memory. I currently use a one gig SD card (sandisk) which with in excess of 200 documents still has 800 kb of space remaining. These documents are a mixture of e-books and PDF documents.

Lots of the things I'm going to be reading are literally just collections of JPG images, and these collections average 100MB. 1GB would fit ten of them. The fact is that I can easily see myself running out of space. I also intend to take advantage of the MP3 playback capability. True, an organized person with perpetual access to their PC would probably never need much space, but then if that were the norm, there'd be no market for 4GB+ Ipods.

Take a look at the wiki - Category:IRex iLiad and in particular Iliad Memorycards list. At one point there were several "red" entries in the CF cards, but now it seems that almost any card will do. Note that CF cards are not problem free, mine sometimes does not get detected on reboot for example, but no particular card is known to be worse than others.

I use scandisk extreme III card for photographic purposes and downgraded an old slow 4 gig card I had lying around for the iliad. I do not see much sense in using a high speed card in the iliad. It will not speed up starting times nor the page refresh rate. The high speed cards are made to handle cameras like the canon 1D MK III that can shoot 10 frames a second and are 12 megapixel devices. The iliad, it seems to me, has no extreme requirements like that. The extreme cards have the benefit of being stable and reliable at a very wide range of temperatures and I pretty much stop reading well within the temperature range of even a modest card.

I have a 4Gb CF card and I think it's about halfway full. I have books and journal articles on it, as well as my own notes. I've been thinking about converting my manga library to the iLiad, but I'd almost immediately run out of space.

8GB Transcend? I had avoided that brand when shopping around because of its less than ideal reputation, but they certainly are cheap. I have seen 8GB Transcend cards priced at a pittance more than the cost of a 4GB Sandisk. I would surely prefer 8GB as long as there aren't any reliability issues I should be concerned about.
Anyone else using an 8GB Transcend? What's the model number? And is there a cheaper source than Amazon.com? ;p |

It is Transcend CompactFlash 120x. I ve been using it for a few months now without any problems at all and I write/delete files quite often.
As for the cheapest source I live in UK and my cheaper than amazon.co.uk source will probably will not do you any good unfortunately. Last edited by tesa; 12-05-2007 at 03:49 PM. Reason: mistyped |

That 's true. A microdrive is a mini hard disk in a CF casing. Since there are moving mechanical parts in it, it draws more power than a standard CF.

I use my iLiad for almost all paper keeping these days. I scan bills, mail, notices, place them on my iLiad. I do school work on my iLiad, and any documents related to work (web application programmer) goes on my iLiad, so obviously I am in a bit more need for some memory.
1GB is a fair amount though, even for my use, over the last 2 months I have had the device I have only used about 100 GB of storage. Originally I was using the SD slot, but found this to actually be just a little unstable. Sometimes the content listener wouldn't save or didn't list contents on the memory card. I switched to CF and all my problems went away, not to mention the CF is generally faster for read/write operations (look at http://www.robgalbraith.com for more info). And I did notice a definite performance increase when I switched to CF. I am now using a 2Gb Sandisk Extreme III CF card. |
