Help Using Calibre Comic Processing for Kindle 3--Images Don't Fill Screen

Hi All--I am attempting to use Calibre to convert series of comic images (in CBR/CBZ format) to MOBI format for viewing on my Kindle 3 Keyboard. I'm having a little trouble with the process and was hoping you all could help me out.

After I convert, the result is a MOBI file that is viewable on my Kindle. However, all the image files are slightly too small for the screen, with white space on the left/right as well as on the bottom. I had hoped for the images to be fit to the height of the Kindle, filling the screen. Currently I need to zoom in on each individual page as I am reading in order to fit to height.

Is there a way to convert to MOBI format using comic book processing so that the images are fit to the height of the screen? I am using "Keep Aspect Ratio" under Comic Input, and I have Page Setup set to Default input profile and Kindle output profile.

I've tried the following:

- in Comic Input, turning off 'Keep Aspect Ratio'
- in Comic Input, setting 'Override Image Size' to 600x800 pixels in comic input settings
- in MOBI Output, turning on 'Ignore Margins'

None of these seem to have any effect, and the images remain too small for the screen.

Thanks for your help.

I was about to post the same question and then I saw your post. I am experiencing the same problem with my Kindle Touch 3G. And in addition to what you tried, I tried a couple of other things but nothing worked. And it's not only a CBR/CBZ format to MOBI format conversion issue. I tried it with EPUB and PDF to MOBI, and it didn't work. As you said, the images don't display as full screen, and they are not vertically or horizontally maximized either that there is white space on the left, right, top and bottom sides, and the bottom white space is relatively a little bit bigger. There are several options on Calibre which are about setting the margins but nothing seems to work. I tried many combinations.

The question is IS there really a way to convert image books (of any kind) to full screen MOBI using Calibre?

The Kindle has no way of displaying full screen images in MOBI files.

Kovidgoyal, thanks for the reply. Is the problem due to MOBI files or Kindles? I downloaded a manga from Amazon and it displays better, at least it's vertically maximized. But the file's extension is AZW. Would Kindles display full screen AZW files? Will there ever be a "convert to AZW" option in Calibre?

AZW is the same as MOBI. You can play with how images are sized in the comic input settings, to try to come up with something better, but basically the MOBI file format has no support for full screen images. And in any case, the aspect ratio of comic images rarely matches that of the available pixels ona kindle screen.

The link below clarifies that it is a Kindle specific issue and it has nothing to do with the third-party software such as Calibre. According to the link, "on the Kindle, the only image that will use the whole screen is the cover. All of the other images in your content will have a stupid-looking border around them and there's nothing you can do about it."

Is there any way to let the Amazon Kindle developers know about this issue?
