The "Cloud" is being as safe a repository as it has been from its inception.
Suddenly a new generation of computer users learn the hardway what their predecessors had to learn the hard way.

Indeed. The flaws of storing anything that matters, or anything that doesn't, in "the cloud" goes all the way back to thin clients. If it's not on your hardware, it's not yours.

At least one professional photographer lost years of irreplaceable photos because he stored them online. The firm shut down with out any warning and he did not have any other backup.

The cloud can work wonderfully as backup storage, and a convenient way to access your files from anywhere. In no way cloud storage can excuse you from making your own local backups (and sensitive data should be kept away from it).

Let's face it. In general, people like to be happy, comfortable,
unworried. Sometimes this leads to laziness, carelessness and
to emotional states that we will call "distracted" in order to be nice.

There are virtues in being paranoid, in being suspicious, in anxiety.
You don't lose a lot of stuff.

The real trick is striking a balance, where you can be comfortable,
and have security as well.

I find that redundancy is the key.
Not just 1 external drive, but two or more.
Not just a house firebox safe, but a safety deposit box also.
Not some questionable cheap or even "free" online storage
facility, but one that is run by a business, and backs up
its depots with parallel depots.

For once I can agree with everything you say... just because you're paranoid doesn't mean "they" (and/or the world) aren't out to get you...

And multiple backups, of anything you are attached to, is never a mistake...

Then he's an idiot. I have no sympathy whatsoever for anyone who depends on something to feed their family, and does not keep multiple, independent backups. There is no excuse. (Yes, I am an IT professional. Why do you ask?)

I'm glad I don't have much of anything of importance up on a cloud anywhere. And, the stuff I do have in my dropbox thingie is backed up on a portable HDD just in case.

So, I have a macbook and a time capsule for backup. The time capsule is in the same room as the macbook. Should I be using cloud storage as a secondary backup? And what service is cost effective, safe, and secure? I am using about 300gb on my hard drive.

elemenoP:

For your setup, I'd recommend an additional NAS box, specifically one by Synology, in which you add paired drives specifically approved for it (inexpensive WD models included).

You'll not only avoid the problems that come with a wired connection (logic board eccentricities and bad resets -- I once saw a PRAM reset on a custom motherboard in a Mac tower take out multiple drives). You'll also enjoy the perks of a really active developers community. Their Android app for my Galaxy S allows me to stream music and films from home. I can also monitor my apartment when I'm away. You can schedule the massive backups to happen when you're asleep or at work and they're completely painless.

I mention Synology NAS boxes because they have excellent synergy with Macs (though they work well with my PC/Linux laptop, too).

Thanks, Presti. For at-home backup, I'm really happy with the Time Capsule. The only reason I would add a cloud backup is in case (knock wood) my apartment burned down, and took out BOTH the macbook and the time capsule, since they are physically in the same place. So I don't think adding another hard drive would solve that problem. Maybe I only need a partial cloud backup, of my photos and my work documents (I am a freelancer, so my macbook is my work computer).

You're smart to be thinking of worst-case scenarios. Additionally, Time Machine only gives you one backup. The rule is to have three copies of all important data, which means an additional drive of like capacity or greater, which means either a second hard drive you connect directly on occasion, a NAS box or a network or cloud backup.

If I hadn't chosen a different solution, I'd opt for a backup to my own or a really trustworthy friend's server as opposed to a third-party cloud. There's also the question of security and cloud-based backups. I don't even like the idea of my smartphone backing up to a cloud. Most people I know back up to their SSDs and clone those for security reasons.
