Complete Newbie

I have a little computer experience if you consider using it as a typewriter, experience. I have a Lenovo 3000 C100 running XP, SP3.

My wife wanted an ebook because some of her friends had them. We decided to start with a used Sony 505 to get used to the system. She quickly loaded it up with 123 free titles.

Now she followed the craze and bought an Ipad with her own money and spends her time playing solitaire and using Facetime.

I don't want to delete her selections because I'm sure that as soon as I do, she'll want to transfer one or two to her Ipad.

I have tried to follow how I could create a separate library or catalog of her selections so I can create an individual library or catalog or whatever you call it that I can put my own selections in and hers will be just one entry. This program seems to be a real gem for a database manager but is there A way that I can do something simple like this? I guess I'm bollixed by the now language.

I dont quite understand what you are asking but if I am correct in assuming that you are saying how can I create a library that stores the ebooks and allows me to choose what gets loaded and what doesn't without permanently deleting them, then, Calibre is your friend. Just have a look att he forums here on MR and Calibre's home site as well. It is very easy to use and free. You can create different libraries for different purposes (or genres etc) if that suits your needs or just maintain one large library from which you sync books on and off your devices or devices.

Thank you for the kind words but could you point to where it talks about how you create a library. I see references to it but I have found no concrete description of what it consists of, or how to create it. That's what I'm asking for. I sense there is great capabilities there but I find no place that describes how to start a new one for instance.

I'm sorry but I don't know what MR refers to and I thought I was on the forum part of Calibre. Those of you steeped in this don't realize just how opaque it can be.

The forum part of calibre ids the part of the forum labelled "calibre" not Sony Reader and MR stands for the forum MobileRead Forums.

Here is a link to the how to use Calibre section of its home site - http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/

It will give you an idea of what you can do (it is a very powerful program that will do as little or as much as you require). A library in Calibre is essentially a folder structure on your hard drive. When you load books into Calibre, it adds them to the library (by author name). If you use Calibre to organise and tag your ebooks and load your reader, you usually dont need to worry about the underlying folder structure.

It might look daunting at first but it is really a very straightforward piece of software with great functionality.

On the MobileRead (MR) forums, there is a section devoted to Calibre - the developer hangs out there and there is alot of usual information about getting the best from the software.
