New Nook ST Concern

I just got my Nook ST today. I plugged it into my computer to give it its initial charge. After a few moments the screen saying "There isn't enough power to turn on, please wait 15 minutes" came up. An hour went by, and it still had that message up, so I decided to try turning it on anyhow.

Keep in mind it was still plugged into the USB port this whole time.

So it turned on and the window for the USB drive came up on my computer but it was completely empty, no folders or anything, and it said there was no free space, and for a while in the system info of the Nook it said 0MB of 0MB available for free space. Then a little while later it updated to saying 236MB of 236 available.

The battery was at 13% and I turned it off and let it sit for four hours but it still wasn't charged up when I went back to it. I turned it back on and the battery said 30%.

Then I read online somewhere that you have to leave it on in order for it to charge, instead of plugging it in then turning it back off. However, it did charge a little in those four hours, from 13% to 30%, it just charged very slowly.

So my grand question is, is my Nook somehow borked and do I need an exchange?

I should add I did unplug the Nook once, but only while it was off. After I had turned it off already as I mentioned above, and then read it needs to be on to charge, I unplugged it while it was still off, then plugged it back in, at which point it turned itself on. It hasn't been unplugged while it was on yet.

The PC provides at most 1/2 the power of the charger. You sound like you don't have a charger, but you can use any micro USB charger providing 1A, like from a phone. If you have one, plug the Nook and let it charge until it's full, should take less than 2 hours. Monitor your battery use afterwards to make sure it is in good shape.

If you use the PC to charge, it will take at least 3 hours, probably longer.

Thank you for responding.

I will say it's charging up faster now that I have it on than it did when I had it off.

My main concern was that I messed something up by turning it on before the screen saying, "There isn't enough power, please wait 15 minutes," went away, and that I could have also potentially messed something up by unplugging it that one time before it was fully charged, even though it was completely off when I unplugged it.

The nook needs to be ON to charge. By default it will power-up when you connect the charger.

Don't worry about having unplugged it before it was fully charged. Just charge it and use it normally; the first few cycles you may get less battery life than expected, but that's normal.

Thank you for helping to assuage my fears that I messed something up. I'm not an idiot, but sometimes I act like one .

And thank you gbm for the link, I'll have to save that.
