Question How to open Calibre via LAN ?

Hey everbody,

I would like to now, if I could open Calibre via LAN from PC to PC.

The libaries are on an external HDD and I would work on these from two different computers.

I do not want to share the libaries or to use the server option.

Is there any option ?

Thanks in advance
Janine

If you set the share on the remote PC up as a mapped drive then this works fine.

There is one big caveat though - you must NEVER have both PC's running Calibre at the same time or you will corrupt your Calibre database.

The current Calibre design assumes that it has exclusive access to the database and so if two instances of Calibre are running they over-write each others changes. There is long tem work under way to redo the Calibre database layer to remove this restriction, but there is no ETA for it becoming available.

External HD? USB?

Just install Calibre Portable on the drive, then plug the drive into what computer you want.

+1. I don't use regular Calibre installs anymore. I just have calibrePortable. Makes backing up and switching computers easier, too.

Another +1 for Portable. It can run a little slower depending on which computer I'm using it on, but it's far more efficient than keeping my library sync'd on multiple installs or working with a library over the network. (Yes, in the past year I've tried about every configuration you can imagine before realizing that portable was the way to go.)
