Book covers (Kobo store)

Hello,

I recently bought some Kobo-books for the first time (didn't know they'd sell to the Netherlands).
I noticed they didn't have the covers they are supposed to have. The covers only have text with the title/author. Is this normal for Kobo.
It's not a big deal because I can edit metadata in calibre and at the cover I want, but I just think it is weird.

It's not a Kobo thing but a publisher thing, and it's sadly normal for big publishers

And not afraid to name and shame - Random House and Penguin are good at this. Lovely covers in the web store - download with grotty generic covers.

My main complaint about this is that the generic cover is exactly the same for every book from that publisher making them impossible to tell apart.
I wonder if Penguin will ever realise that the stupid little penguin thing that they put on their book instead of a simple page with the title and author just makes me NOT want to purchase another Penguin book incase I get yet another book with an identical meaningless cover?
I know (and do) change the covers in Calibre but it annoys me that I have to do that just so I can identify different books.

That explains why I've never seen it before.
It's the first time I've bought "abroad" and in Holland we get nice covers.

I think it probably has to do with the rights the Publishers have negotiated with the artists who do the covers. They did not negotiate the rights (ie pay more money) with the artists for electronic distribution.

You can change the covers with Calibre.

Agree, but you don't buy a paper back at the store and have the assistant rip the cover off and say "oh, you'll have to make your own cover for that".
