Did you buy a lot of ebooks in 2011?
I was just thinking how much money having an ebook reader has saved me.
I looked over my Amazon, Sony, and Smashwords accounts (these are the only places I spend money on ebooks) and I have spent $12.97 on ebooks this year! I am really proud of myself. I download books from the public library frequently as well as books here at the MR library and free books offered by authors. For me, an ebook reader has been a great investment. I read constantly and I've never been at a loss for reading material. I'm wondering if other people are happy with the amount they spent. Has an ebook reader saved you money or have you ended up spending more? Last edited by banjobama; 12-07-2011 at 02:52 PM. |

I don't like to add up my book purchases--I did one year and the total scared me!--but I would guesstimate that I spent about the same.
On the one hand, I format-shifted a lot of books because this was my first year with an e-reader and I wanted to downsize my paper library, so that was added expense, plus I bought books that I would have passed on before, because now I have no physical space limitations stopping me from sampling new authors--again, added expense. But on the other hand, a lot of books I would have previously bought in hardcover were cheaper as e-books, so I've saved money there, and I've used the public library, which I never did for paper books. |

I don't know how much I actually spent on ebooks. Probably not very much in all since most of them were free books when I bought them. One or two were around $9.99 I think though I didn't buy many that weren't free. The downside (if there is one) is that I have all that reading to catch up on. lol.

Since moving to ebooks I read a lot more free books.
I think I have only spent about fifty dollars on ebooks this year, about what I used to spend per month on used books. |

So far $0.
Reason: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...ght=calculator But I would have spent $481.97 if I didn't use the library. |

I keep stats. The agency pricing has halved my spending.

I've "bought" a good...80 or so ebooks this year, most of which were freebies. I've MAYBE spent $7 on the rest of them.

All of us spending less isn't what Amazon, B&N, Kobo, Sony, Publishers, retailers and tax collectors want to hear.

I'm afraid to total it up. BUT it would be less than what I was spending on paper books. Reading is my main source of entertainment & I don''t spend much on clothes or cosmetics so I feel somewhat better about how much I spend on books.

In the years that Fictiowise had agency books at great prices I was spending hundreds a year. I probably spent $20 this entire year. It is mostly library books for me now.

I bought 80 books this year--68 from Kobo. I also borrowed eBooks from our library, but not all that many as our library doesn't seem to have much in the way of literary fiction. I spent in the neighborhood of $600. That is less than we used to pay for pBooks in a normal year.
If that seems extravagant, what can I say? We don't buy a whole lot of other things that other folks seem to routinely buy. Last edited by taming; 12-07-2011 at 09:20 PM. |

If an interesting book appears in the Overdrive catalog as currently available, I put in a Purchase Suggestion for the title - my library has always bought those; I think they like suggestions as it makes their job easier.
