-=PE ONLY=- Pocket Edge Golden Ermine update

Hi everyone!

After I could set up everything, the system in my PE decided not to boot anymore, so I had to reflash. I did not feel like doing the full reflashing dance (Dingo golden, filesystem re-distribution, Ermine, Allmine), so I decided to go and make an Ermine Golden update, so you can reflash over anything a working Ermine.

It turned out to be reasonably straightforward once you understand well how the UBI system is laid out and how update.sh works. I did not need to do major changes to the original Ermine update.sh (the enTourage guys did a decent job, I have to say).

This is the as-released Ermine 0.9, I did not add anything else, although I don't think that will be hard. Also, in this one there is about 500 MiB for the library and about 2.5 GiB for apps . That is also configurable in the update.sh file for courageous people.

I trust this one better than the previous dingo "mucked" update, so feel free to try it (if you need it) and sending feedback. It should install over any other system (Dingo, Ermine, Allmine) although I only tested installing it over Allmine.

It *will erase all data, apps and settings* (it is a golden update after all). Also, DO NOT install in a full-size Edge, as it will install happily (checks are disabled so it can install over Allmine) and mess it up.

I have also noticed that all this filesystem rebuilding has brought up several bad NAND blocks in my PE. A caveat is that this might exercise too much your flash and cause bad blocks (the block would go bad anyway, the NAND flash in the PE is quite bad I would say).

You can download it at:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/klj2wv

Thanks to MasterTec for hosting the file in his site! the link is:

I suggest changing the thread name to include PE only, or we are going to have people not reading your warning and bricking/borking their EEs.

any luck for a recovery menu? this is super cool anyway, with 2.5 gb space for apps. it is a major development. would it work with menu+rotate?

I haven't downloaded anything from Sendspace before.

When I went to the download site and clicked on the top download button, it downloaded a windows executable entitled DownloadSetup.exe.

I deleted this out of fear <g>.

Is this executable necessary to install (on a windows machine at that) in order to download the file you uloaded there or has the link been captured by an evil villain?

I am sorry - I didn't think the file would be large (uh-duh). It is 220 megs.

The name sounded wrong GE-update, until it dawned on me that that stands for Golden Ermine.

Please forget prior comments (as long as I don't have to install a windown executable on my mac or linux machines <g>.

Don't worry, I would hate it for people to have to install a Windows executable just to download a file. I myself don't use Windows so I understand.

I'm glad you were able to download it. I just used sendfile.com because it was one of the first results in google for "free file hosting" (and Megaupload's flash interface does not work at all with Gnash).

BTW I just notices after using your golden, than update to Allmine+Gapps I have apps missing from market like Dolphin, Dolphin Mini and much more others.
used to have them ok on old allmine from dingogolden>ermine>gapps update. not sure has to do with your update or something to do with a market.
but your setup seems very snappier and faster running 2 units with allmine one with yours partitioning and the other on standard, yours is faster really.
That's interesting, I could not find Dolphin on mine either. Do you see different apps in your two different units? I have no idea why that could be...

I did not expect any speed improvements, but I can imagine why there might be a small speed up (different data compression options in the filesystem).

This is a potential hardware failure, right? So, should we hold back for now?

Yes, it is a hardware issue, and could be a potential problem.
Whether to hold back, or not depends on how conservative you are. It all boils down to the fact that if you erase your flash memory a lot, it will go bad anyway. So if you are going to be flashing your firmware often, it doesn't matter what you flash it with, and it is going to wear out and bring out as bad any marginal blocks in the chip. And there is nothing the software can do to prevent that.

On the other hand, all these chips have a reservoir of spare blocks (I think in this case it has about 200 spare blocks, although I'm not sure), so it should work for a reasonably long time.

My rule of thumb would be: Don't reflash unless you need to. If you can live with your PE right now, hold using this update until you need to reflash or if you run out of space for apps and can't wait to install more.

the pe that i flashed 10 times at least has no bad blocks.
the one that I flashed 2 times has 2 bad blocks, but working fine after repair.
so it is a hit and mis really.

I think there is something going on with the market, I am curious if people that recently installed allmine on nonmodified ermine, is the market working? i think has to do with focus camera we are missing, i am trying a fix tomorrow from another forum, i will report so you can modify the id. a full rom inclusive working allmine will be good pablob as will stop going through another update.

For a faster download you guys can download it at the following location from my server. NOTE: Don't hold me responsible if it bricks your PE. I haven't personally tested it although others have and say it works great!
