![]() ![]() Hi folks, sorry to let the first post be a "help-post". been reading alot on this forum, it is great.. i am to get a tablet, e-reader.. but i do not know what to get now. i am a student taking a bachelors degree, then a master in engineering. on my little spare time i chew away about 2-3 books pr month. first my need for the studies, i need a device wich can be able to read some pdf`s, check mail and web for logging in at the university etc.. therefore i should have colors. but really would like a e-ink device for reading both technical and regular literature and have availability to get lots of books. same as i want a travel companion being able to listen to mp3`s while reading. no doubt i see the advantages a e-ink have over a regular lcd. what should i get here, i`ve googled the internet empty soon and starting to feel bad for the servers.. should i get one android tablet(xoom2, transformer prime....) for all my work, and one e-ink(kindle touch, nook...) for reading books..? but really would like to get one in all device, and hate to be dragging to tablets along. or should i be looking for the jetbook color when it arrives, since it is a e-ink with the capability to show colors in pdfs, mail, web and such? maybe it would be perfect for my needs? need input from other users here, i am sure im not alone with this dilemma.. going crazy over this. not sure what to get.. would be so much easier if i knew what to do.. ![]() Last edited by rbuljo; 11-24-2011 at 06:45 AM. Engineer here, reading computer and technical books most of the time.
The bad news, maybe you know this already. PDF is not an ebook format. There is no ebook reader out there that can give you a decent experience, and with "decent" I mean not a reading experience, but interaction, writing notes, editing, etc. The good news: an iPad with Goodreader can give almost you need for a rich PDF experience. I used to own Kindle DXG. It was good for reading PDFs, but nothing beats the iPad plus Goodreader app. Not only you can make annotations, but gives you color. It can be a distraction too, but if you're on a tight budget or want an only device, the iPad can be a good choice, even 1st gen. iPads. Now, for a true reading experience, nothing like an eink device. Of course, you will need good ambient light, but it is easier for your eyes and they have better battery life. The drawback (or good, it depends) you cannot browse emails, Internet, or use it for much more than reading a book. Some let you access webpages, but the experience is very limited. My successful combo: iPad2 for technical books and PDFs and Kindle 3G with keyboard for regular text books. In some cases (increasing because boom of ebooks) most technical books can be read on Kindle 3 on landscape mode if they have been properly formatted. By the way, for content creation, no tablet is good enough in my opinion, not only because keyboard but because available software for that. The one that gets closer is the Transformer, but you may need a serious netbook. I personally like the Mac air, but we're talking about serious money investment. Yes, I think is better, you'll get the best of the two worlds. iPad and Kindle is a very popular combo here in mobileread.
There are a lot of options for eink devices but Kindle is probably the best for engineers because Amazon's computer books selection, plus I think Kindle for iOs is a more mature and better app than its Android counterpart. Last edited by jocampo; 11-24-2011 at 08:02 PM. |

I just want to second everything jocampo has said. I work a lot with pdf and ended up getting an iPad for that purpose. I use the PDF Expert and iAnnotate apps and they are both really good. I have e-ink readers for books. They're so light so carrying them around really isn't an issue for me.

I just googled the jet book. It looks interesting but maybe primarily geared towards school?
