PDF Law Review Articles: Sony Reader Wi-Fi PRS-T1
I was recently going to purchase a tablet of some sort, whether it be the iPad, Android, or the Kindle Fire/Nook Tablet to read PDFs. However after watching this video of a Sony Reader Wi-Fi PRS-T1 handle PDFs I am not sure anymore.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsRYBoLhfEw I do prefer a e-ink screen and prefer the low weight of ebooks. The fact that it can crop pages, as law review articles have large margins, and re-flow is amazing. Auto-crop and two or three column auto cropping is very very very nice. I do not care much to be able to write notes but I guess it won't be a negative. I am not sure which to get now. I am not sure about the speed of turning pages and refresh rates if and when I have to zoom in and out. However, that video makes it seem like its not bad at all. http://www.uclalawreview.org/pdf/59-1-1.pdf That is a link to a law review article. The article itself starts from page 4 where you can see the large margins. Anyone that could test this out with crop mode using the Sony Reader would be very much appreciated. Thank you! I found that the T1 didn't really cut it for me in terms of reading pdfs, so I went with an iPad for that purpose. Some of the pdfs showed up almost OK, while others were hopeless. I want to be able to just load and read without any conversion etc involved, and I also annotate extensively and need proper page numbers. I love the T1 otherwise, though.
I have a thread on it here, there might be info there that's useful for you: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=156791 |

You may want to check out the PRS-950, Sony's last 7 inch e-reader (eink) which handles PDFs MUCH better. You can find them on eBay, but they are expensive.
Even with the PRS-950, you will need to tag some PDFs so they display better, and the only way I know how to do that is with Acrobat Pro... |

I too would want the least amount of hassles in converting PDFs and such. That YouTube video made it seem like the T1 handled PDFs really well. Although I guess maybe I should just invest in a tablet. |

Well, if you look at that link you can see how some of my pdf-s displayed. Since the screen is relatively small, I always had to reflow the docs and that's where the problems started. Some of them came out so badly that I couldn't even read them because it was so distracting (never mind taking notes/annotating in an efficient manner). However some of them weren't too bad (just minor reformatting issues). I guess I just needed a higher level of predictability - I need to know that when I load a pdf, I can read it without having issues or having to go through additional conversion procedures. Granted, I'm probably less flexible than a lot of other users, but I'm just generally pressed for time at work so I want something that just does the job without me having to think about it.

Have you looked at the Kindle DX (I think that's what it's called, it's a relatively big one for reading pdfs and magazines/newspapers). However, it's almost as expensive as a tablet, I think (and I'm also not sure if it portrays page numbers, if that's important to you - that is another deal breaker for me).

For books I rely mostly on my e-ink readers but I have both Kobo (ePub) and Kindle installed on my iPad. |
