Recommended Editors

So I've gotten back from the Beta Readers, and I have a stack of edits to sit down to, and I'm feeling really good about where the story is ending up, and I think I'm still on for a March publish date.

But I'd like to have a professional set of eyes proof the final copy because I can't very well ask my Beta Readers to go through it all AGAIN just to find typos.

Does anyone have an editor (and I mean typo-editor, not plot-content-editor) they recommend? My budget is limited, but I assume that's true for most of the folks here. I'd prefer to pay by the page/work, and not by the hour.

I'm surprised I've not gotten a recommendation yet. Or a post from an actual editor for hire, even.

I figured everyone would have one already besides me.

I generally do more development editing than proofing, but I have worked with someone who might be a good option for you. PM me if you're interested.

I would be looking for both... but much less on the proofing since my wife does a great job with that already...

I've heard good things about Hazard Editing (http://hazardediting.blogspot.com/), although I haven't worked with them personally.

It's funny actually, finding a content editor was much easier than finding a copy editor and reliable copy editor recommendations are damn near impossible to find.

I think a large part of the problem in locating an editor is that the person who wants the editor rarely knows what services they are looking for. There is a large difference among types of editors and whath they do.

When advertising for an editor, you should specifiy the book's category (e.g., consumer medical; history; Victorian romance; fantasy) and what services you want the person to perform.

You might want to read Finding a Professional Editor: The Needle in the Haystack Problem and some of the articles linked there in, especially Editor, Editor, Everywhere an Editor. (These are articles I wrote for my An American Editor blog.)

Putting out a general call for an editor is really like spitting in the ocean -- there is so much left unsaid that it is difficult to respond with a list of appropriate names.

Is there a company/service/person that you know of that I can have read my ebook for a reasonable fee? This is my first ebook, so I'm new to this.

It's only about 20 pages or so. I have some people in my niche looking it over to get their opinion subjects that need to be added or removed. What I'm looking for in-addition to that, is someone with an eye for tone, diction, consistency of past or present tense writing throughout, etc.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions of where, or who, I should turn to, as well as how much I should budget for compensating someone for this.

By proof reading do you mean syntax, spelling, and gramar only ?

I don't re-write, except where they've missed a word out or got a few words in the wrong order. It's more for something that is finished and ready for publication than a first draft.

I had to look up what a copy editor does, I assumed it was just another name for the same thing.

I don't do any of these, but the rest of it all fits:

ensure the text is in line with the publisher house style

check facts and raise queries with the author

look out for potential legal problems and discuss them with the publisher
