Could a Computer One Day Rewire Itself? New Nanomaterial 'Steers' Electric Currents in Multiple Dimensions

ScienceDaily (Oct. 16, 2011) — Scientists at Northwestern University have developed a new nanomaterial that can "steer" electrical currents. The development could lead to a computer that can simply reconfigure its internal wiring and become an entirely different device, based on changing needs.

As electronic devices are built smaller and smaller, the materials from which the circuits are constructed begin to lose their properties and begin to be controlled by quantum mechanical phenomena. Reaching this physical barrier, many scientists have begun building circuits into multiple dimensions, such as stacking components on top of one another.

Funny you should mention the car: Improved logic devices could eventually run our cars on autopilot, proving to be better drivers than humans (not that that's hard), and even being able to do things like register a passenger's sudden illness and reroute them to a hospital, alerting other cars to give way for the medical emergency.

So if this improved artificial intelligence works out, the car won't be the killer it was...

thats crazy, its almost like a brain rewiring and bypassing non-functioning neuro pathways in stroke and accident victims.

Yeah, but once that little logic device evolves, decides we're the problem, locks the doors on the car and...we're as good as done for.

Or it could decide we need to be looked after ala Colossus the Forbin project and humble us by doing a better job than we have done ourselves.

Why would it? We passengers would give the cars a reason for being, and without us driving, the world would be a better place. More likely, they'd be begging to drive us every few feet, and we'd never get any exercise.
