US Navy Overdrive Library
Apologies if this isn't considered news, but it was news to me.
The US Navy has an Overdrive lending library available for all Active Duty and Retired Navy and Marine Corp personnel. Available books are in PDF, ePub and Kindle formats. I checked out both a Kindle book to my Kindle4PC and a epub for use on my Sony a couple of days ago and they both worked great. Current selection totals E-books Fiction - 5709 books Non-Fiction - 3621 books Audio Books Fiction - 14483 audio books Non-Fiction - 6732 audio books If interested and qualified go to Navy Knowledge Online and create an account. Login, then go to Reference > E-Library - Audio & EBooks and click on the Overdrive - Audiobooks, Ebooks & More section. I believe you will be prompted to create another account but after this you do not have to log in through the main NKO site. Enjoy! |

Thanks for passing the links to the other Military Overdrive sites. I was pleasantly surprised that having retired from the US Navy 13 years ago I still was allowed access.
BTW, I have family in NJ and I'm pretty sure I recognize that seagull. ![]() |

My father was in the Navy in the '60s - would he still qualify, or is it for people who were in longer?

I believe you have to be a Military member in the DEERS system which would mean all current Active duty, Retired, current Navy Reservists and all who left due to a disability and are still collecting some sort of VA disability for their time in the service. I'm unsure but under the right circumstance It also might mean the spouses, if they are still in the DEERS system. The worst that could happen is for him to try and create an account and the system not recognize him as eligible. |

I got my ID to get on the Air Force's Overdrive from the Base Library. Works great. Even has music and movies. You do need to get a login, though.

I've been using this for over a year. I like the Navy better because I can log directly into my Overdrive account. With the Army, I have to log into the main database, answer security questions, jump through hoops of fire, etc.
The Navy literally had no waiting lists for any of their books, and it was nice to being able to download whatever I wanted at any time. I guess the party had to end sometime. |
