Very frustrated
I have a Kobo Touch that I got in June as a college graduation gift. It has given me 0 problems until now.
I have not used it in months as I read a lot of actual books, and my Kobo is what I use for travelling. I plugged it in today, did the updates that it asked me to do, and now the kobo is not registering on my computer at all. I click connect on the screen (when it comes up, sometimes it does not come up at all) and on My Computer and on the kobo desktop, it says that my kobo is not plugged in at all. I called Kobo Help and they did not know what to do. I plugged it into a different computer and it did the same thing. Does anyone know what to do? |

Have you tried a different USB cable?

I only have one! Do you think it is a cable problem? I did have to get a new cable because my roommate's dog chewed the one that came with my Kobo so I bought a new one from Chapters.

I've never had to, but you can do a hard reset by poking the small hole on the back of the device with a paper clip. http://kobo.intelliresponse.com/inde...set+my+eReader
There is also a method of holding down the home key while sliding the power switch. That is referenced in another forum post from a Kobo employee: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...2&postcount=14 |

I did a factory reset but that made no difference. Now the only difference is that now there are 0 books on my Kobo.. not that it made any difference because I had finished all the books that were on there anyway. I'll try that one though. Thanks!

I've had issues with the USB drivers that Kobo ships (on both my laptop and home machine). Sometimes it blows the Kobo driver blows up the USB settings so the Kobo can't be seen. |

Thank you, but I really don't think it's a problem. I bought a new one and it works fine to charge it (it's a universal one so that I can plug it into the wall or the car) and when I plug it into the computer, the kobo says it's connected to the computer but the computer is not registering it. I don't think it's ever going to work.

You first need to localize the problem by isolating the possible causes, working from simplest to hardest. You have a couple of things to work with: the KT itself, the cable, the firmware, the desktop PC. If you have tried another cable then it is likely not that. Next, try to install the Kobo Desktop software on another PC and try to connect to that. If that fails then you're left with a few KT options such as the factory reset pinhole or turning the unit on while holding the Home button down. If all of the above fail to correct the problem, you may have a bad unit, and only Kobo support can address that.

I think the connector inside the Kobo is sometime loose. Try wiggling it when connecting it and see if it changes anything.

Another thing to make sure of is not using any sort of a hub or USB extension cord to connect the Kobo. Best to only use the rear USB ports (ie, the ones connected directly to the motherboard) on your computer. (my Kobo connects fine through those, but not when I've tried with a hub or extension cord - I've tried with both. With a hub it tends to dump my KT within a couple of seconds of Windows recognizing the device, on those rare occasions it actually recognizes the hubbed KT in the first place)
