Unhappy Automatic Syncing for email / calendar / etc

So I have google hooked up finally (except the market still doesn't download - the Talk error) and I can check my email and it has my calendar, etc.

It *isn't* notifying me of new mesages though unless I'm IN the email app or if I manually refresh.

Is this a symptom of the market problem or some setting that I'm missing?

All the boxes for sync are checked for my accounts in the account settings.

Any ideas?

I think my situation is similar.

I am notified of new Gmail messages without having either Gmail or Froyo open, but have I get the Talk failed authentication and I get an error trying to download apks from the Android Market.

After adding a corporate account (m.google.com as server), I have gotten calendar sync going, but contact
sync doesn't work. I get a Google sync error on the Accounts page next to the Google icon, and an error on the Sync details page for the Google account next to the Contact Sync. When I uncheck Contact Sync the Google error disappears.

On the Accounts page, the Local Calendar account is set to Sync is OFF and I can't seem to change that, although as I said, the Calendar app (with a notebook with a wirebinding icon, not the android icon) DOES seem to be synchronizing with my Google Calendar.

Hope the two sets of problems suggests something in common to anybody reading these posts.

Steve
