White screen of dealth

Well I got my PE updated and a few apps installed and then opened it up to the white screen. I got it new off ebay so I'm out 120.00. So very sad. I wonder how many PE have done this?

Not many, but some. Are you sure it's dead? Some people have recovered from WSoD. Also, in one of the sticky posts someone just the other day mentioned a tech repair place that might actually be able to help. Of course, I am assuming you have no recourse through the seller.

I hope you can save your device somehow -- it is indeed sad, and not just because of the money.

I have bought a PE from ebay.com, having it shipped to Germany, updated to Ermine and now have a WSOD. I am searching the discussions for a solution, but couldn'd find any. Bad news. We can use this thread to keep each other informed if there is any evolution in this WSOD-case. If it is a realy a hardware case, there is not much hope. For me there is no chance of returning it, as others have done.

dpeakable, principio, First let me say the WSOD is not as common as it might appear - people let you know then it happens but not when it doesn't, also it may not be permanent.

Now to try and solve the problem. First please read the threads about the WSOD and the steps people have taken to get out of it.

Having done that, try some of the solutions and see what happens - if you are unsure of how to do anything ask here and we'll try and help.

I assume you have both tried the 'power off and restart' process as well as the 'paper clip reset' - what were the results?

Are your units fully charged?

Are they getting hot anywhere?

principio, as a last resort I might be able to do something - we repair computers and notebooks here in the south of France.

well, after a couple of days it looks like a permanent one.
Regarding the when: I more or less followed The Ermine Tweaks sticky thread, means: rooting, updating to ermine. Then I have tried to bring google Market to the device - i have bought some apps for my htc desire s. I have followed this thread (coming from the above mentioned thread). The files I have installed with titanium backup for doing that came from my Desire S, running android 2.3.3.. Most of these files didn't install, there was an error showing up (I don't remember the message now). After that, I could browse the market app, but still couldn't log into the google account to download the software.

Nice offer. Sounds good to me. It have read about some "golden dingo update", that is the next step that I will try to do.

OK, your answers are more or less as I expected.

The PE has a somewhat underpowered video subsystem and in some cases - like yours - updating and adding some apps that stress the video system cause it to overheat. This overheating may, or may not, be fatal - the only way of testing this is to use the p-update.golden.zip renamed to just update.zip and follow the procedure to back-level to 1.6.

If you find going back works then you can try updating again but without rooting or adding exotic apps until you have run the system for some tome to check it is stable.

I made the golden update. I believe that the update procedure was a success (initializing the e-ink-side various times, then ending up with the regular e-ink-side "read, write..." and showing a very pale taskbar on the top of the lcd screen), but nevertheless it has not changed the lcd.

ivanjt, I am thinking about your "last resort" offer, but could you tell me about your plans?

One last thing to try - use the paper clip reset.

As to the last resort I'll PM you later after I've spoken with some of the techs.

It had no effect - other than rebooting/resetting. At least no other effect is visible for me.
