Sony eReader 300, Apple Snow Leopard, Calibre help wanted

Has anyone written down the 'recipe' for downloading Public Library books
to the 300 Sony, through my Apple Snow Leopard? My software is Calibre.
Assume that:
100,000 Sony 300's have been sold.
100,000" Apple Snow Leopards have been sold.
Calibre is a popular Library software.
100,000 people are downloading library books.

Surely SOMEONE has figured out how to download public library books to a Sony 300, through an Apple Snow Leopard w/Calibre…Yes? -smile-

I can drag in and download the Gutenberg free books easily through Calibre, but when I drag in two Public Library books, no go. I try to convert (Convert Books, on Calibre)
and a sign comes up: Could not convert because no suitable 'source format' was found."

Do I assume that this means the public library is sending these books, but the Sony300 is incapable of converting these books for it's format?

Any help from a Sony 300 owner with an Apple Snow Leopard downloading public library books through Calibre software would be much appreciated. Thanks. Francey

What is the file format? Are you using overdrive to download the books or something else?

Yes, you can read library books on a 300, that was the reason I purchased that model last year.

Not sure what you mean by downloading library books via Calibre?

If you are downloading them from the library, the initial file most likely will be an .adsm file, which is a pointer to the actual file. To get the file, you need to use Adobe Digital Editions, which will download the correct file, and decrypt the DRM so you can use it on your Sony. Your Sony will need to be recognized by Adobe Digital Editions as well.

So, do you have Adobe Digital Editions installed?

It gets weirder for Sony users on the Mac with the non-wireless models of reader. You need Sony's software to enable the device to read DRM'd content. I uninstalled Sony's software once the device was activated and just use Calibre + ADE. Calibre for my collection and ADE to get library books + DRM'd downloads from places like Kobobooks.

The process can be a little overwhelming for Mac users, especially if you have new hardware and OS X Snow Leopard or Lion.

Calibre can't convert DRM'ed books. Library books are special because of both the Adobe DRM and the time expiration date. It is further complicated because Adobe Digital Editions for Mac can't recognize the Sony ereaders as an attached device to transfer books via the Adobe software.

Do you have the Sony software installed? You need to do that and authorize your ereader. See instructions here.
http://ebookstore.sony.com/howitworks/

If your Mac default boots into 64-bit mode, then you will have some extra steps to get the Reader Library software to work and recognize your ereader too. See Post # 2 in this thread.

Once you sort out the above, then here is the method that I use.

1) From your library account page, download the book. It will show up in your Downloads folder with an ACSM file extension.
2) Open this file with the Sony Reader Library software. It will import the book into your library.
3) Attach your 300 to your computer via USB and it will show up as an icon in the Reader Library software on the left-hand panel of the software window.
4) Drag-and-drop the book from your Library onto the 300 icon in the left-hand panel.
5) Eject your 300 and then disconnect the USB cable.

Hope that helps!

Sony eReader problems

Thank you all for the kind replies.
I did everything suggested and more and finally was able to download books directly from the public Library.

The final KEY needed was to open an account at the SONY STORE, where I downloaded a free book to give it a trial…then on the right side of the Sony Store page was a Notice that there is now a connection offered through SONY whereby you choose your public library, download your book and VIOLA! down comes the book into your Sony eReader.

Thanks again for all your suggestions. Bye. Francey
