Viewing enhancement idea

Two things you should probably know right up front;
1) I do not own any ereader devices, I do my reading using my laptop which also acts as my home computer. I therefore am not limited to any one specific ebook format.
2) my skills with personal computers is very limited, I am much more comfortable with large corporate mainframes.

When reading an ebook with calibre Viewer I find it very annoying to find page breaks are not occurring where I would expect as compared to Adobe Digital Reader, Kindle for PC, etc.

Perhaps it would be possible to have an option, when opening an ebook for reading, to choose which viewer to use. (That begs the question, is a callable module for viewing only available in the other software, or are they inseparable from the library portion of their code?) Or would it be easier to modify the calibre Viewer so that it does the exact same page breaking as the "native" viewer? Or would this be better as a plugin?

Thank you in advance for your response(s).

Use the (optional) Open With Plugin to set up which readers you wish to use (if disabling the specific format in the "Use Internal Viewer" Preference will not suffice )

Have not found the ..."Use Internal Viewer" Preference... that you mention. Have found the optional "Open With" plugin. It does have Adobe Digital Reader but not some of the others: Kindle for PC, Kobo for PC, and Nook for PC.

The internal viewer stuff is in Preferences->Behavior (see all the checkboxes in the bottom right).

As for Open With - you can add entries for other applications such as Kindle for PC etc yourself. I just package the plugin with a bunch of common defaults which didn't happen to include those only because I don't use them myself. If someone puts together the shortcuts for them and sends them to me I will make sure they are in the next release.

With the three formats I found used within the plugin, here is what I found on my system which is running Windows XP:

(Amazon) Kindle for PC -- AZW and MOBI
C:\Program Files\Amazon\Kindle\Kindle.exe

Kobo Desktop -- EPUB and MOBI
C:\Program Files\Kobo\Kobo.exe

(Barnes and Noble) nook for PC -- EPUB
C:\Program Files\Barnes & Noble\BNDesktopReader\BNDReader.exe

This does not seem to work. In some cases it seems to pull up the library view for the particular application but not the specific book from the calibre library. When it does pull up a book I am unable to verify where it picked that book up from; I keep books in the various reader libraries as "source" backups for my calibre library. This is going to take more time than I can devote at present.

The "Open with" plugin is used to open covers or books from within the calibre library exclusively.

Also, Kobo Desktop does NOT support the opening of either ePubs OR Mobis

Where are you getting that information? The information I have is that Kobo eReader, Kobo Reader WiFi, and Kobo eReader Touch all support EPUB, and that Kobo eReader Touch also supports MOBI. I have no written information about Kobo for PC but the ebooks I bought from Kobobooks and initially read with Kobo for PC are in the Adobe DRM EPUB format.

Good to know but when I implement something by making "first time" changes I like to test it out thoroughly for myself so that I personally can see and know what is going on.

I clearly said Kobo Desktop which is what YOU listed

If you perform a SYNC within Kobo Desktop with the Kobo bookstore, it downloads a Kobo format ePub, commonly called a kEpub which can NOT be opened by ADE.

If you select the option from the web site to download an ADOBE DRM EPUB then you will get a true ePub, which can be read within ADE, but this file can NOT be opened by Kobo Desktop.
