help needed from the Scandinavians
About as off topic as one can get, but could some of the Danish/Swedish/Norwegian speakers help me with a pronunciation problem.
Long story short - I joined a living history group of vikings from the year 1000, and had to choose a name. I took GLADR - as it seems to be a translation of Joy, my real name. Problem is, nobody knows how it is said! I've had Glohdr, Glohdyer, Gladr, Gladyer, Glaydr, Glaydyer, Glahdr and Glahdyer, and other subtle variations. does it ring any bells with anyone? |

Hmm, this should probably be consulted with by an Icelandic.
It so happens that one of my colleagues are from the said country and in combination of my own interest in old Norse language, I may be of assistance. ![]() Gladr should be pronounced "straight forward" like "Glağr" G as in gut L as in live A as in Hard Ğ as in them (although very soft) R as in rollerblade (but a rolling "r" like the Norwegian og Spanish pronounciation) Edit: Glağr means "happy" (more or less) Edit 2: Scratch that. Glağr means "happyness" and Glağ means "happy". ![]() Last edited by Bikeridr; 09-01-2011 at 06:39 AM. Reason: Clarification |

woohoo - that was a fast reply - thanks Bikeridr - you are a shining star!
So, Gladr for JOY wasn't too far off the mark, then. |

But do be aware that Bikeridr's help refers to Icelandic - which you didn't mention in your OP, and which would be different from other Nordic languages. In Danish "y" is often pronounced somewhere between "u" an "oo" in English. A single "d" is usually quite hard, but a bit less voiced than it would be in English, though a "dd" is much closer to English "th".

Our group is set in Southern sweden, but that's not to say that Gladr didn't come from somewhere else - they were hot on slavery, and the group did spend some time in Constantinople with the Varangian guard. I love the backstories, and want to get mine as watertight as I can! (hollow laugh)

@TGS
A bit true what you say. Even though Norwegian (Bokmål) and Danish are very similar written language, the pronounciation is *V.E.R.Y* different. I referred to Icelandic since Joybells here said it was a 1.000 year old viking setting. Then, the most common (Nordic) language was Norse. In fact, Britons (especially Scottish), Danes, Swedes, Norwegians, Faeroese and Icelanders had a common language. Today Icelandic and Faeroese are the closest to our Old Proud Language. Before we got lingually Germanised.. ![]() (Norwegian, Danish and Swedish belongs to Northern Germanic language group) Last edited by Bikeridr; 09-01-2011 at 08:33 AM. Reason: Nordic countries |
